The Roger Varian-trained CONSENUS DE VEGA was sent off as the 11-4 favourite for the 7f three-year-old handicap at Lingfield’s Racing League meeting on August 11th but a patient ride form stall 11 made life very difficult and he could never get involved. He was six lengths back in fourth but did second best of those to come from off the pace behind Honky Tonk Man and the market looks to have overreacted to that performance.
SWISS ACE was a big eyecatcher at Hamilton when last seen, finishing a 16-1 three-length seventh of ten after making the running on the ‘dead’ rail from his poor high draw. The first three home raced down the middle from stalls 2, 1 and 3 and it was a solid effort in the circumstances. Ruth Carr’s gelding has only scored once from 12 starts on turf and will appreciate the return to Tapeta having hacked up by five lengths in a fast time over course and distance on his latest all-weather start. His only other run on synthetics saw him finish third at 66-1 (also over trip and track) behind Bless Him and Vafortino, now rated 9lb and 8lb higher. Paul Mulrennan is a positive booking and the stable is in good form.
HONKY TONK MAN – Newcastle 8.15 – 1pt win (7-1 bet365, 6-1 generally)
HONKY TONK MAN did best of those ridden patiently when runner-up in the same Lingfield race as Consensus De Vega and similar tactics would have been ideal at Newcastle next time. However, Saffie Osborne gave him a prominent ride and he could only finish fourth after being swamped by runners described as ‘held up in rear’, ‘midfield’ and ‘towards rear’. He was three lengths clear of the next prominent racer and the drop in trip and change of jockey could make the difference. I’ve saved on stiff-track expert STRIKE RED.
