WAR TREATY – Carlisle 4.20 – (1pt win – 8/1 generally)
PRINCE NABEEL – Carlisle 4.20 – (1pt win – 3/1 generally)
WAR TREATY was a big eyecatcher in a 6f restricted maiden at Hamilton last time, his third run for a handicap mark. Kevin Ryan’s War Command colt raced again the ‘dead’ rail virtually throughout and though finishing last of the six runners, the 18-1 shot was only beaten by a little over three lengths. The two horses who raced widest of all fought out the finish that day and that effort was deserving of a major uplift. He looked to finish with plenty in the tank and should improve for the step up to 7f and nursery company.
PRINCE NABEEL was sent off as the 10-11 favourite for the same Hamilton race as War Treaty last time, but he too raced in the ‘swamp’ on the stands’ side rail and could only finish fourth, a length and three-quarters behind the winner. That was a good effort in the circumstances, and he too should improve for the switch to handicap company and step back up to 7f. He’s been gelded since we last saw him and he was only beaten by a head over this trip at Chelmsford on his penultimate start.
ALREHB – Newcastle 7.15 (2pts win, 5-1 generally)
HONKY TONK MAN – Newcastle 7.15 (1pt win, 9-2 bet365, 4-1 generally)
ALREHB ran a blinder against the pace bias at Doncaster’s Racing League meeting on August 4th, racing prominently into the headwind and only going down by a neck in second place. A similar ride will be handy here as there’s little in the way of early pace, no wind to speak of and the track has been favouring prominent racers this summer because of the dry/powdery conditions and kickback. His all-weather record reads 212511 (3-6), improving to 11 (2-2) over 7f only.
I wrote the following about HONKY TONK MAN in my GG Eyecatchers column after his latest run at Lingfield…
‘Severe kickback made it hard for the closers to get involved over the shorter trips at Lingfield last Thursday and the usual ‘dead’ rail went missing, which resulted in plenty of winners challenging hard up against the inside. This 7f handicap was dominated by the pace horses, with 14-1 shot Buckshaw Village, who raced in second place, overhauling frontrunner Ideal Guest (18-1) in the final furlong. HONKY TONK MAN came from off the pace to grab third after meeting trouble in running and can be regarded as unlucky. His record on the all-weather now reads 113 (2-3).”
’The downside tonight is the likely lack of pace in this 7f handicap but he’s still worth an interest.
