BERKSHIRE SHADOW – (1.00 Ffos Las, 1pt win – 11/2)
It’s rarely easy to come from off the pace on the straight course at Newbury, though Amazonian Dream managed to do that when landing a 5f nursery at the Berkshire venue on August 13. Whistledown, just over three lengths back in fifth in that race, fared second best of the hold-up horses and the pair finished one-two, separated by a nose, when they did battle again at Sandown just nine days later.
Andrew Balding’s BERKSHIRE SHADOW finished seventh in that Newbury nursery under a patient ride after blowing the start in first-time blinkers and looks very interesting now back up to 6f. Ffos Las will be kinder to his running style and low draws have done well in sprints here of late.

BREEZE EASY – (2.40 Carlisle, 1pt each-way -14/1)
The handicapper, rightly so, has not given BREEZE EASY a mark despite her having already had three runs. She was a big eyecatcher from off the pace when a 14-1 fifth of 11 at Windsor on her second start and left the impression that she could have been much closer under a more vigorous ride when a 16-1 sixth of seven – beaten just over two lengths – at Thirsk last time. The same owner’s Rohaan had a very similar profile, never finishing better than mid-division in three runs at prices ranging from 40-1 to 150-1 before landing a nursery off 55 on his handicap debut.
That looks the hindsight good thing of all time (he’s now rated 115) but any hope of pulling off a similar coup with Breeze Easy on her fourth start has been dashed. Or has it? I suspect connections will need to show their hand here if they are to obtain a handicap mark, with a third or fourth place probably being the minimum requirement. The Racing Post’s Topspeed figures have her as the fastest horse of those with racecourse experience yet she’s forecast at 33-1. The temptation might be too much to resist and she’s worth a speculative each-way punt.

MARAAKIZ – (5.00 Carlisle, 1.5pt win – 3/1)
I originally expected to be tipping Kentucky Kitten in this race – he was a big eyecatcher at Doncaster last time, doing well to finish a close-up third under a forcing ride on a track that eats frontrunners alive – but he faces competition for the early lead from Broomy Law and Forest Falcon, so I’m expecting this race to be set up for a closer despite the small field.
MARAAKIZ was only fourth at Haydock on his latest outing but clocked a fast time and the race wasn’t run to suit his patient style. Runner-up Yorkshire Lady, who also came from off the pace, won a £20,000 to the winner handicap at Sandown next time.

LUCKY ROBIN tends to perform best at this time of year, recording form figures in handicaps during July, August or September of 1111113324FP (6-12).
