Published: 8:00am – 4th August (Odds correct at time of posting, where available)
ASCOT ADVENTURE – 6.10 Doncaster (0.5pt each-way – 11/1 bet365, SpreadEx, 9/1 generally)
MELODY OF LIFE – 6.10 Doncaster (1pt each-way – 12/1 generally)
There’s plenty of pace in this 7f handicap and the race could be set up for a closer. ASCOT ADVENTURE probably found the race coming too soon after his Haydock win when only fourth at Goodwood last time and has been freshened up by a 60-day break.
He ran a cracker over course and distance on his reappearance, doing best of the closers when a three-quarters of a length fourth of 18 and his Haydock win came after an eight-week break. Slower ground would have been preferable but there’s compensation in the price.
MELODY OF LIFE was beaten by just over five lengths into third of seven when favourite at Chelmsford last time but that was a cracking effort. He was ridden patiently on a track that was massively favouring early pace and the winner/runner-up, who shared the lead throughout, never came back to the field.
Cheekpieces go on for the first time, probably on the advice of the excellent William Buick who rode last time. Horses ridden by Buick on their latest start, that rock up in first-time headgear, are profitable to back blind whether he’s on board again or not, winning 57 of their 312 starts for a profit of £83.28.
CORBALLIS FLYER – Leopardstown 7.20 (1pt e/w, 20-1 in a place, 16s generally)
CORBALLIS FLYER raced over 1m1f, 1m4f and 1m2f in his three runs prior to last month’s 12-1 eighth of 16 in a 7f handicap at Gowran Park. That was a cracking effort, as the track was typically favouring early pace and low draws, with the first three described as ‘made all’, ‘prominent’ and ‘prominent’.
The first seven home came from single-figure draws and Coraballis Flyer, ridden patiently from stall 13, did well to finish only eight lengths back over an inadequate trip. There’s plenty of pace on today and he looks well drawn.
