KHAIRAGASH has improved on the clock since fitted with cheekpieces, finishing a close second over 2m at Leicester before an eight-length runner-up effort over 2m4f at Bangor. The drop back to 2m will suit and Charlie Deutsch takes over from a conditional jockey.
SOLSTICE STAR – (1.50 Warwick, 2pts win – 4/1)
Ten-year-old SOLSTICE STAR looks very interesting in this veterans’ handicap chase now that he drops back to Class 4 level and reverts to chasing. He was only 15th of 19 in a Class 3 handicap hurdle at Cheltenham on his latest outing but was 100-1 and still clocked the best last-time out speed figure according to Raceform. His record in Class 4 handicaps when fitted with a tongue-tie stands at 11111 (5-5).
ELLENS WAY – (2.55 Warwick, 1pt each-way – 11/1)
I bet ELLENS WAY at Fontwell last time (December 8th) despite the nagging suspicion that I’d got there a race too soon, as her three wins have all come a few days either side of New Year – December 26th and 31st and January 3rd. She could only finish a modest second but that was an improvement on her previous efforts this term. Plenty of her rivals like to come from off the pace and she might be able to dominate today.
THE MACKEM TORPEDO – (3.50 Newcastle, 2pts win – 9/4)
THE MACKEM TORPEDO did well to win over 6f at Wolverhampton last time as the track was not helping his come-from-behind style. The runner-up, third and four were prominent throughout and he now has form figures of 4121 (2-4) since blinkered, improving to 11 (2-2) in sprints. He’s never raced over today’s 5f trip but he remains open to improvement as a sprinter.
