USTATH – 2.20 Hamilton (1pt win – 3/1 generally)
USTATH was only tenth of 20 at Thirsk last time but the 20-1 shot actually did second best of those drawn low. He was eight lengths behind Dreamcasing, who was best of those poorly drawn, but it was still an encouraging effort. He’s hardly prolific on turf (1-19) but is worth a small interest.
HARD SOLUTION – 2.20 Hamilton (1.5pt win – 9/1 generally)
HARD SOLUTION trailed home last in the same Thirsk handicap as Ustath but was also poorly drawn and was eased down when beaten. He tends to come good at this time of year after he’s had a few runs and might do better this time. He likes it here, recording form figures on good or faster going of 131126 (3-6), with the sole unplaced effort coming on his seasonal debut this year.
EMERALD LADY – 4.20 Hamilton (1pt win – 20/1 Bet365, 16/1 generally)
EMERALD LADY looked unlucky when a close-up fifth in a 5f restricted novice stakes at Wolverhampton in December – she was drawn widest of all, got bumped and pushed even wider as the stalls opened and then met trouble in running. She was second a stride after the line and probably would have won with a clear passage. The winner – Sweet Glance – has a won a turf handicap off 63 this year and now runs off a mark of 67. Emerald Lady hasn’t shown much since handicapping, though was caught wide and taken on for the lead at back at Wolverhampton next time and had the worst of the draw in stall 9 of 9 when last at 66-1 on her comeback at Redcar last month. The badly-drawn third Dandy Dirmont (stall 8) has won since, fourth-placed Dusky Prince (stall 5) is three from three since and Sherdil, fifth from stall 6, is two from two since. Admittedly, she was still a long way behind Sherdil but with that run needed, her yard in such good form and the step back up to 6f likely to suit, she’s worth chancing at a big price.
