RUTHLESS ARTCLE – (3.20 Stratford, 2pts win – 11/4_
For a horse who has often received the comment ‘jumped left’ over hurdles it was no surprise to see RUTHLESS ARTICLE struggle on his chase debut at Ludlow last October where he repeated the tendency on his way to a 53-length second of three.
Another right-handed outing followed at Hereford a fortnight later where he travelled well until a bad blunder four out ended his chances. Rested over the winter, he returned in handicap hurdle company at Exeter in April where he again lost ground by jumping markedly out to his left on another right-handed track, this time finishing a 31-length last of four. He was the late market mover for a 2m4f novices’ chase at Aintree seven weeks ago and never saw a rival on his way to a two-length success over the short-priced favourite Presentandcounting.
His record left-handed for current trainer Rebecca Curtis now reads 91242116P1 (4-10), improving to 122111 (4-6) on sharp tracks. He’d be getting a few pounds from some of today’s rivals were this a handicap and won’t get a soft lead this time but he’s open to stacks of improvement under these conditions and looks over-priced.
BIRD FOR LIFE – (4.55 Nottingham, 1pt each-way – 10/1)
BIRD FOR LIFE was left with way too much to do when third at Wolverhampton last time, doing well to finish as close as she did given the steady early how the track was riding. The big field will hopefully result in a stronger gallop this time and she’ll be staying on best of all.
WHENTHEDEALINSDONE – (5.20 Goodwood, 2pt win – 8/1)
WHENTHDEALINSDONE was a big eyecatcher at Newbury last September where he came from off the pace to land a 15-runner 6f maiden on a track that was typically favouring prominent racers. The next six to finish all raced on the front end, including runner-up Twilight Calls – favourite for today’s race.
Whenthedealinsdone didn’t progress in his next three runs but won well in a 5f handicap at Windsor in late June on his return from a gelding operation. He fared second best of the nearside group when an 18-1 6th of 17 in a hot 6f handicap at Newmarket last time and the return to the minimum trip could be the key.
He handles soft ground and William Buick, on board for the Windsor win, returns to the saddle. Roger Teal ended a quiet spell with winners at Wolverhampton on Monday (7-2) and here at Goodwood on Tuesday (13-2).
VELVET VISTA – (Epsom 7.35, 1pt win – 9/1)
VELVET VISTA continues to defy the handicapper and finds herself on another career-high mark after fourth in a 7f handicap at Newamrket. That was a fine effort, as the frontrunners never came back and she fared easily best of those ridden patiently. She handles slow ground and is worth a small interest.
