WANEES really caught the eye when arriving late to land the Esher Cup off a steady gallop at Sandown last time. Racing freely in a first-time hood towards the rear of mid-division, he was switched to the outside to challenge two furlongs out but took a while to wind up.
It looked like front-runner City Runner would hold on, but Wanees quickened well close home to score by half a length. He’s now three from three since running green on his debut and looks rock-solid here.
There was a huge rail bias on the round course at Haydock’s meeting on May 28th, so it was some performance by JIMI HENDRIX to land the 1m Class 4 handicap under a late/wide run.
The runner-up and third were always to the fore on the inside and Ralph Beckett’s three-year-old was generously raised only 4lb. Aside from seasonal debuts, his record now reads 11 (2-2). Post-race, jockey Jim Crowley, quoted in the Racing Post, said “He could run well in the Britannia, a big field will suit him.”

CLAYMORE – Ascot 5.35 (1pt win – 8-1 Paddy Power, Betfair)
I want to oppose odds-on favourite Reach For The Moon, who can race keenly in small fields and is unlikely to encounter the preferred strong gallop. Jane Chapple-Hyam’s CLAYMORE was well held at Longchamp last time but that was in the French Derby and this test looks far more realistic.
He split subsequent Irish 2000 Guineas winner Native Trail and Derby runner-up Hoo Ya Mal when runner-up in the Craven Stakes on his comeback and the form was given yet another boost when Zechariah, last of six that day, ran second by a nose in the Queen’s Vase yesterday.

Star Of Orion – 6.10 Ascot (1.5pts each-way – 25-1 generally, Sky Bet & Bet365 paying seven places)
STAR OF ORION did second best of those to race down the centre of the track when a 25-1 eighth of 27 from his poor low draw in the Victoria Cup last month and that run, his first of the current campaign might have been needed.
He runs over the same course and distance today and has rarely run a bad race over 6f-7f on anything other than heavy going, recording form figures of 1232128 (2-7). There’s plenty of pace among the middle draws and I’m happy with stall 16.
