CLOUD THUNDER hasn’t had many realistic opportunities on turf – starting at 40-1, 250-1 and 150-1 (in the Group 2 Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot) – in his first three outings before a handicap second over 1m4f at Newmarket on heavy ground in October.
He improved for blinkers and the step up to 2m on the all-weather over the winter, winning a jumpers’ bumper at Lingfield, keeping on strongly into a close fourth at Newcastle behind subsequent dual winner Wise Eagle and, last time, catching the eye after making the running on the ‘dead’ rail at Wolverhampton. He steps up from Class 5 to Class 4 level here but if he can translate his recent improvement back to turf he looks overpriced at around 14-1.

COLONEL FAULKNER – 8.20 Newmarket, 1.5pt win – 7/1)
COLONEL FAULKNER was well backed ahead of his reappearance run over 1m at Musselburgh in March – his first start since being gelded – but patient tactics were a disadvantage that day and he had to settle for third place behind Mark Johnston pair Naamoos (winner again since) and Forest Falcon.
He then raced much closer to the front end than ideal when only fourth of five over 1m2f at Doncaster. He’ll be happier back over a stiff 1m, won’t mind the slower ground and should get a good tow into the race with Anghaam, Urban War and Mr Excellency all likely to be up there from the outset. Colonel Faulkner clocked a fast time for his latest and the Archie Watson yard is in great form.
