3.00 Exeter – NUMITOR (1pt ew – 11/1 William Hill)

At the time of writing Come On Teddy was trading as the 3-1 joint-favourite for this 2m3.5f veterans’ handicap chase and that looks on the skinny side given that he’s lost all seven starts since scoring at Uttoxeter back in December 2021. The ten-year-old has failed to take advantage of his sliding handicap mark in four runs over hurdles this term and seems ideally served by left-handed tracks. Reverting to fences at right-handed Exeter could pose problems and I’m happy to take him on.

Since the advent of veterans’ handicap chases, ten-year-olds have out-performed their older rivals and that’s been especially true in these shorter races, with horses of this age group winning 33 of the 46 races (from 188 runners, 17.6%), compared to nine from 106 for 11-year-olds (8.5%), three from 33 for 12yos (9.1%), one from 12 for 13yos (8.3%) and 0-2 for 14yos. Since the start over 2019, backing all ten-year-olds in veterans’ handicap chases over 2m-2m5f would have found 17 winners from 81 bets (21%) for a profit of £15.18 to a £1 level stake at SP. Class-dropping ten-year-old NUMITOR, has been off the track since pulling up in last season’s Topham Handicap Chase at the Aintree festival, but form figures over fences below Class 2 level of 113113 (4-6), suggest that he could bounce back despite the absence.

6.30 Wolverhampton – ARCTURIAN (1pt win – 7/2 Bet365)

ARCTURIAN caused a 50-1 upset when making his debut at Kempton in mid-December and the Richard Hughes-trained three-year-old could still be underrated in the market here. Since the beginning of 2020, Hughes has had 12 all-weather winners who were making their racecourse debuts and seven of them followed up for a profit of £21.03 to a £1 level stake at SP. All three who made their winning debuts at Kempton were successful and Arcturian, whose win was backed up by a fast time, can maintain his 100% record.
