There’s plenty that can be fancied here but, at the likely prices, I want to side with STRIKE RED. He has a fine record on stiff tracks, with form figures of 41321112 (4-8) suggesting he’ll be hard to kick out of the frame The Richard Fahey stable has been quiet of since the turf season commenced but stall 1 could prove useful (the stalls are on the far side) and there’s pace drawn around him in the shape of Ostilio (stall 2), Gale Force Maya (stall 3) and Punchbowl Flyer (stall 5).
RIBHI – 1.5pts win – (2:25 Newmarket, 1.5pts win – 100/30 generally, including bet365, Paddy Power and Coral)
RIBHI challenged on the slowest part of the track when an impressive soft-ground winner at Salisbury on his debut last summer and he looked unlucky in Listed company on good to firm going at Doncaster next time. He signed off with another soft-ground Salisbury success and Newmarket’s stiff finish should suit when he reappears in the Free Handicap.
BELL ROCK – (3:00 Newmarket, 1pt win – 8/1 generally, including Ladbrokes, William Hill and Coral)
BELL ROCK is three from three when making his seasonal debut at this venue and can bounce back to form. He was well beaten over course and distance in the Cambridgeshire on his final outing last term but was drawn on the wrong side of the track and he’d raced just three weeks earlier.
