I’ve gone round in circles with this race. At first I wanted to be with small-field expert Hortzadar, who ran a blinder to finish third from a poor draw in the Lincoln, then I switched allegiance to Oh This Is Us, who has a good record in handicaps and is well drawn near the rail. Both like to come from off the pace, never easy on the Rowley Mile course but it looked possible with front-runners OVERWRITE and Dogged in the line-up. However, Dogged is a late non-runner and it now looks as though Overwrite could get an easy time of things at the head of affairs. Trainer Mark Johnston was 14 from 57 in Newmarket handicaps last year (24.6% strike-rate, +£37.32 to a £1 level stake at SP), with those who switched from the all-weather winning five from 16 (31.3%, +£24.50). Overwrite would have needed his comeback run in the Spring Mile at Doncaster and his forcing style was no help when runner-up at Newcastle last time. He has won at the third time of asking in each of his two previous campaigns and he’s drifted to a bigger price than when fellow pacesetter Dogged was in the field, which doesn’t make a great deal of sense. Stall 1 could make it tricky for Hortzadar to get cover and he’s short enough now at around 11-4.

ETON COLLEGE, a stablemate of Overwrite, weaved his way through from off the pace to score against the bias at Musselburgh last time and now has form on turf since his racecourse debut of 31102211 (4-8), with the ‘duck egg’ excusable as he played up in the preliminaries at Glorious Goodwood. He clocked a good time for that win and the 4lb rise puts him on 86, the same mark he won off at Leicester in September.
