MELODY OF LIFE – Kempton 3.30 (1.5pt win, 9-2 bet365, 4-1 William Hill)
Andrew Balding’s MELODY OF LIFE had caught the eye when third in a 1m handicap at Chelmsford last month, doing best of the closers in a race dominated by early pace. With a headwind forecast, I’d expected him to be given a patient ride in a 7f racing league handicap at Doncaster on August 4th and was pleased to see him go off at 9-1 from the overnight 14s. However, whether by accident or design, Marco Ghiani, on board for the first time, broke smartly and disputed the early lead. He was still there two furlongs out but was swamped soon after and had to settle for sixth place, just under three lengths behind the patiently-ridden winner. The first-time cheekpieces might also have contributed to his early track position and he can bounce back today.
TWILIGHT MADNESS – Kempton 4.00 (1pt each-way, 10-1 bet365, 8-1 William Hill)
TWILIGHT MADNESS challenged on the slowest part of the track when only fourth at Southwell last time and will be happier back at Kempton, scene of his two previous all-weather wins. It was vital to challenge down the centre in the straight at Southwell, but William Pyle took him towards the inside rail. Well drawn in stall 2 today, the four-year-old’s full record over trip and track reads 211 (2-3), with the defeat by a head when 25-1 in novice company.
