NIGHT ON EARTH – Nottingham 3.50 – 1pt win (14/1 generally)

NIGHT ON EARTH is the lowest rated horse on show in this 5f conditions contest but we’ve seen some shock winners in recent years, and they all had one thing in common – they raced up with the pace. It can be very difficult to make up ground from the rear in sprints at Nottingham and, so far this year, frontrunners have won 14 of the 39 races. Night On Earth finished well beaten at Doncaster last time but that was in a field of 12 runners, and he hung right towards the nearside rail when all the action was far side. He wasn’t beaten far when third to Lord Riddiford in a 15-runner Glorious Goodwood handicap the time before and he’ll appreciate the small field. His full record in fields of seven or fewer runners stands at 12774151231133 (5-14) for a profit of £10.53 and he’s worth a small interest at a big price. There are a couple of interesting three-year-olds in the line-up but we have to go back to 2005 to find the last winner from that age group, food for thought for those wanting to wade in at short prices on either Korker or Audience.

THERMAL – Carlisle 5.10 – 1pt win (7-2 generally)

My original plan was to back The New Marwan who raced in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail when a beaten favourite at Chester last time. However, there are other pace angles in this race – Calliope and See The Sea – and the inexperienced amateur jockeys (this race is confined to those who had ridden no more than three winners by the start of the current season) might go too fast. THERMAL could prove to be best of the hold-up horses. She often failed to settle when with Gary Moore and won despite racing freely on her debut for Kevin Frost at Southwell last time. The faster they go, the happier she’ll be.
