ALERO – (TAUNTON 3.40, 2pts win – 11/2)
Timberman heads the market for this 2m handicap hurdle but he looked flattered when scoring at Kempton on his latest start, benefitting from a pace collapse and racing wide on the quickest part of the track. He’s been withdrawn twice because of soft ground since that win and, though it’s officially good to soft today, it could still be too slow for him. There’s also no obvious pace in this race and it is unlikely to be run to suit.
AJERO is much more interesting. He could only finish fourth of five to Onemorefortheroad at Huntingdon last time but that race worked out well, with the winner following up in a Listed handicap at Newbury before his Grade 3 handicap second to Tritonic at Ascot. Runner-up Takeiteasy wasn’t far behind Champion Hurdle hope Tommy’s Oscar at Musselburgh next time and third place Ingleby Hollow scored at odds of 17-2 at Doncaster on his next outing.
Ajero was less than eight lengths behind the winner and the break since early November can be viewed positively, as he returned from a similar absence to score at Market Rasen in the corresponding week last year. His record right-handed since his hurdles debut reads 1111P5 (4-6) and he has made the running in the past.

BATOCCHI impressed with his attitude when coming out best of a protracted duel with the runner-up in a 1m4f handicap here last time. He raced closer to the ‘dead’ rail than the second and the pair finished well clear of the remainder. His record since stepped up beyond 1m reads 22111 (3-5) and the extra two furlongs of today’s trip should suit. I thought he’d be more like 6-4 rather than 9-4.
