REAL WORLD – 2.30 Ascot (1pt win ‘without Baaeed’, 6-5 bet365)
LIGHTS ON – 2.30 Ascot (1pt win ‘without Baaeed, 7-1 William Hill)
Baaeed probably has to get struck by lightening to prevent him from winning the Queen Anne but that does not mean the race lacks betting opportunities. REAL WORLD chased home Baaeed in the Lockinge at Newbury to take his turf record to 111112 (5-6) and will probably finish second again. I’m going to have a small bet on Charlie Appleby’s runner in the ‘without Baaeed’ market but I also want to side with LIGHTS ON, who did this column a favour when scoring at Sandown on her reappearance (17-2 from 14-1). It’s fascinating to see Sir Michael Stoute’s mare run here rather than take on her own sex in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes later in the week. She’s disappointed in big fields on a couple of occasions, including when poorly drawn at this meeting last year, but has form figures in single-figure line-ups since the start of last season of 11121 (4-5). Just for information, some firms are betting without both Baaeed and Real World, with Lights On around 7-2 in that market.

WAITING ALL NIGHT – 3.05 Ascot (0.5pt each-way, 150-1 bet365)
Richard Spencer’s WAITING ALL NIGHT is a huge price but he could cause an upset. He bids to follow in footsteps of his sire, Rajasinghe, who won this race for the same yard in 2017. He scored over the minimum trip at Wolverhampton on his debut but looked to be crying out for step up to 6f when fifth in the Listed National Stakes at Sandown last time out and James Doyle is a good booking. Patient tactics are usually favoured in big fields on the straight course at Ascot and Doyle’s 52-winner haul at Ascot (from 438 rides) wells exceeds the expected numbers of winners based on their odds. Stall 15 could be an advantage and some firms are paying five or six places.

MOONEISTA – 3.40 Ascot (1pt each-way, 16-1 generally, 14-1 Sky Bet with five places)
EXISTENT – 3.40 Ascot (0.5pt each-way, 66-1 bet365, William Hill)
MOONEISTA didn’t see out 6f on heavy ground in the Commonwealth Cup last year but still ran a respectable 40-1 sixth of 15. She’s finished in the first three in all seven subsequent starts, travelling like a dream in a 6f Group 2 at the Curragh last time before just being outstayed by the winner, who also carried her across the track and may have been lucky to keep the race. She impressed in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes on her latest start at the minimum trip and is going to relish the very strong pace. We can’t be sure that last year’s strong bias to high draws on the straight course will be repeated by stall 14 looks useful, as she’s drawn next door to likely pace angle Golden Pal.
I also want to back EXISTENT (stall 18), who reminds me of last year’s nap of the meeting Arecibo who was second in this race (28-1 from 50-1) for the same owner. He looked unlucky when a 25-1 neck second to Khaadem in the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket and was drawn on the wrong side and had little to race with, running freely as a result, when fifth in the Temple Stakes. That was a good effort in the circumstances, and he too will love the lunatic gallop.

LUSAIL – 4.20 Ascot (1.5pts each-way , 28-1 bet365, four places, 25-1 generally)
LUSAIL looks one of the best bets of the meeting. He won four of his five starts on straight tracks as a juvenile, with excuses for the defeat (he failed to settle when last of four in a steadily-run Champagne Stakes). He’s run two crackers in defeat this term – chasing home Perfect Power in the Greenham when the steady early pace was against him once more before his 80-1 sixth of 15 from a poor high draw in the 2000 Guineas. He made good late progress down the stands’ side rail – the slowest part of the track – and found only subsequent Irish 2000 Guineas winner Native Trail too good on his side of the track. He’s got just over five lengths to make up on 2000 Guineas winner Coroebus but Charlie Appleby’s colt had the best of the draw at Newmarket and there’s a chance – certainly a better chance than odds of around 25-1 imply – that he can reverse the form.
I’ve also saved on NEW ENERGY. Progeny of his sire New Bay go well after a recent outing and he only found Native Trail too good in the Irish 2000 Guineas last time out.
