FALLOWAY DUBREAU failed to live up to market expectations when only fourth in a bumper at Fakenham on last month’s debut for Fergal O’Brien but the 8-11 favourite raced on the inside of the track where the ground was much deeper. In the circumstances, his six-and-a-half-length defeat was a good effort and he looks worth chancing on his hurdles debut.

THEATRE MIX did well to survive a bad blunder when fifth of 12 at Ludlow on her penultimate start, after which I wrote her up in Racing & Football Outlook, suggesting that she’d improve when switched to a track with easier fences. Taunton wasn’t ideal next time (she’d fallen there on her latest visit), especially as she was given a patient ride on that pace-favouring track but she ran another promising race in fifth, doing best of those to come from the rear. Today’s venue should be ideal and, though the very early 22-1 with Hills was quickly snaffled up, she still looks overpriced at around 14-1.

DRAKEFELL – (Southwell 4.40, 1pt win – 7/2)
DRAKEFELL clocked a fast time when just caught in a course and distance seller last month and has form figures in March of 111 (3-3). There are other pace angles in this race – not least stablemate Qaaraat who found 6f too far here last time when helping to set it up for the closers – but we’ve seen pace hold up in the 5f races here all winter, even when it’s a disputed one, and I can’ resist a small bet.

The 7f Wolverhampton handicap won by One Hart on February 26th was run in a very fast time and the form has already started to work out well, with runner-up Spring Romance going one better at Chelmsford and seventh-home Seas Of Elzaam narrowly beaten when 9-1 at Newcastle. FIELDSMAN, a 25-1 front-running sixth in that Wolverhampton contest, has already scored twice at Southwell this winter and will be happier back on Fibresand. Again, there are other pace angles to contend with but he’s simply too big a price to ignore.
