SOUTHWELL 5.30
TANTASTIC – 1pt e/w (15/2 generally)

John Wainwright’s 18-1 shot TANTASTIC ran a blinder to finish a best-of-the-prominent-racers fourth of 11 in a 6f Class 6 handicap at Southwell on his penultimate start. He was swamped inside the final furlong by runners described by the Racing Post as ‘dwelt start, towards rear of midfield’, ‘midfield’ and ‘slowly into stride, towards rear of midfield’. The fifth, sixth and seventh also came from off the pace and he had three lengths to spare over the next prominent racer. He has run well over 5f at Newcastle since, finishing a 10-1 second of 14, this time doing best of the hold-up horses, and the son of Mayson should run his usual solid race from a useful draw in stall 6.

NEWCASTLE 6.15
PERFECT SWISS – 1pt e/w (12/1 Bet365, 17/2 William Hill, 6/1 generally)

We got lucky when our each-way pick PERFECT SWISS placed fourth at 40-1 at Pontefract last month. I thought that the good to soft ground would see the runners come stands’ side but they remained far side and low draws had an edge, with the first four drawn 1, 2, 6 and 15 of 17). Perfect Swiss was beaten by more than six lengths but that was still a fine effort given his track position and I’m going in again tonight. He has a superior strike-rate on the all-weather (four from 14, as opposed to just two from 30 on grass) and his course and distance record reads 117221326 (3-9).

NEWCASTLE 7.15
MACHO PRIDE – 1pt win (10/3 Bet365, 3/1 generally)

MACHO PRIDE was a big eyecatcher at Pontefract in August where he could never get near the favoured rail, doing well to finish fourth. Four horses raced on the inside rail for the majority of the that 6f handicap and they first, second, third and fifth. Ben Haslam’s four-year-old can be forgiven his Thirsk defeat next time when amateur ridden and there was plenty to like about his subsequent narrow second at Ripon where he hit the front too soon in a race run to suit the closers (the winner, third and fourth all came from off the pace). He’s effective on Newcastle’s Tapeta surface and is now 13lb lower than when scoring at Haydock last summer.
