AFANDEM – (2.05 Catterick, 0.5pt each-way, 12/1)
AFANDEM hasn’t won for two years and has never raced at Catterick but his mid-division effort at Nottingham last time was better than it looked. He finished a 25-1 eighth of 14 but did fourth best of those to come from off the pace and was a place and three-quarters of a length ahead of yesterday’s Redcar winner Somewhere Secret, who was also ridden patiently. Twice Adaay, third best of the closers in that Nottingham race, also ran well at Redcar yesterday, finishing a close-up 18-1 fourth from a tricky high draw.
Sambucca Spirit, last year’s second, was also not ideally positioned in that Nottingham race and has possibilities as does Blackcurrent. The last-named been off the track for 155 days and has never won on turf but looks the pace angle among the high draws (they’re likely to come stands’ side in the straight) and this race has a long history of favouring those berthed high. I’ll be having small savers on both.

EARLS – (4.05 Curragh, 1pt each-way, 13/2)
EARLS is an autumn horse whose six best RPRs (Racing Post Ratings) have come from late September until November. He caught the eye when fourth of 23 in a 6f handicap here last time, doing best of the group to race down the nearside.
The drop in trip is not a huge worry – his latest win came over 5f at Naas last November – and his record in sprints when wearing blinkers reads: 311412404 (3-9), with the ‘duck egg’ coming on his seasonal debut.

STANLEY PINCOMBE – (5.20 Chepstow, 1pt win, 15/2)
STANLEY PINCOMBE was a big eyecatcher on his debut at Kempton in February, doing best of those ridden patiently when third at 22-1, a race in which better-fancied stablemate Unanswered Prayers was a narrow second.
He finished last of four in a Warwick bumper on his return to action but the very steady early pace was against him that day and they should go quicker in this ten-runner affair confined to conditional and amateur riders.
