Three-time course winner GODDESS OF FIRE looks the sole pace in this 1m1f handicap and John Ryan’s mare could prove hard to catch. Easy ground holds no fears, and she can be forgiven her last-time-out third of four as the cut back to 7f was against her. She stays 1m2f and if Ray Dawson boots her for home as they turn in, she could prove hard to catch.
EY UP IT’S MAGGIE – Beverley 4.02 – 2pts win (5/1 Generally)
The last time EY UP IT’S MAGGIE encountered officially good to soft or softer going she ran third to Illusionist at York in a race worth £25k to the winner, doing best of those to race prominently in a race run to suit the closers. Five of the first six finishers came from midfield or further back and seventh-placed Night On Earth, second best of those to press the early pace, has won since. Ey Up It’s Maggie has failed to score in four subsequent starts, but all came on unsuitably quick going and she didn’t take to a first-time visor at York last time. Her usual cheekpieces are back on today and her stall 11 draw could be an advantage if they come stands’ side in the straight, as they usually do here on soft ground. Stiff tracks suit – she’s a winner at Carlisle and Leicester – and her sole course outing saw finish second by half a length in a fast-ground maiden.
