Archie Watson has a good record at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards and those ridden by his wife, Brodie Hampson, have form figures of 211111463 (5-9) for a profit of £15.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. With rain forecast on ground described as ‘good’ there should be enough juice in it for the runners to come stands’ side in the straight, favouring those drawn high, and Watson’s MONSIEUR FANTAISIE could have the best of the draw in stall 11 of 11. He won just one of his 17 starts for John O’Shea but is very consistent when racing in sprints (5f-6f) on turning tracks, recording form figures of 3321222 (1-7).

BALLINTOY HABOUR’s three wins have come on tracks with stiff uphill finishes – Newmarket, Pontefract and here at Newcastle on his all-weather debut in April of last year. Surprisingly, his connections wait until last month to try him on Tapeta again when he was a respectable 14-1 sixth of 11 at Southwell, a track that wouldn’t have been ideal. He’s been dropped 3lb for that effort and is now 15lb lower than when successful on Newmarket’s July course last summer. Tonight’s race looks eminently winnable – it’s confined to horses who haven’t won in 2022 – and the Paul Midgley yard has been in good form of late. The market is made by the hard-to-win-with Quercus, who rarely performs well away from left-handed Catterick.
