Stella Barclay’s five-year-old likes stiff tracks and has form figures in blinkers on good/faster turf or the all-weather of 1111271 (5-7). He looks well drawn in stall 2 and his yard had a 33-1 winner at Catterick last week.

The early market for the Group 3 Abernant Stakes bears little relation to my tissue prices and I’m happy to oppose 9-4 favourite Ebro River whose best efforts have come on softer going. Jumby improved for the step back up in trip to 7f on his final start last year, recording a career-best RPR in the process and might be vulnerable on his reappearance. Of greater interest is Chris Wall’s DOUBLE OR BUBBLE, who is incredibly consistent when given good/faster turf or an all-weather surface and a trip of 6f-7f, recording form figures of 21112122 (4-8). She hasn’t had many opportunities at this trip and could have more improvement to come.

HERBIERS needs a couple of runs at the start of each campaign and, since leaving France, his record on his third or subsequent starts reads 1311149 (4-7). He didn’t stay 2m5f when fourth at Kempton on his penultimate start and also found the Martin Pipe trip (2m4.5f) stretching his stamina when a highly-respectable 66-1 ninth of 23 at the festival last time.
That was an especially noteworthy performance, as he raced on the slowest part of the track towards the inside rail. A bigger field would have been preferable but he’s going to appreciate the cut back to 2m1f on better ground here and could still have something up his sleeve from the handicapper.
