GHATHANFAR – York 1.50 (1pt e/w – 16-1 bet365, BetVictor, Coral, Ladbrokes)
I have a rather long shortlist for this race but the one I’ve decided to recommend is Tracy Waggot’s GHATHANFAR, despite a nagging doubt abut his stall 17 draw. His yard won the big sprint at Ripon last week and he was a big eyecatcher over 6f here last time, finishing a half-length third of 15 and doing best of those drawn high when the race developed far side of centre.
That was only his second run in cheekpieces – the other saw him win comfortably over course and distance last month – and he looks over-priced at around 16-1.
SHAQUILLE – York 2.25 (0.5pt e/w – 25-1 generally)
This race has thrown up some shock winners in recent years, including Royal Patronage, the 25-1 outsider of five, who was successful 12 months ago.
Horses who ran at York last time out have a good record (four from 11 this century) and it could be worth taking a chance on Julie Camacho’s SHAQUILLE, who was a 20-1 winner over course and distance on his debut last month. He clocked a respectable time that day and could have plenty more to offer.
ALFRED BOUCHER – York 4.10 (1pt e/w – 8-1 bet365, 15/2 generally)
FRANKENSTELLA – York 4.10 (0.5pt e/w – 10-1 bet365, Boylesports, Betway)
ALFRED BOUCHER has form figures in handicaps over 1m or further in June/July/August of 113442122 (3-9) and looks to have improved for the switch from Henry Candy to Ian Williams. He finished second to Soapy Stevens in a 2m handicap at Chester on June’s stable debut – first run beyond 1m4f – before again finding one too good at the same venue. He clocked a good time for his latest effort and spent the majority of the race on the ‘dead’ rail whereas the winner came very wide.
Since qualified for handicaps, John Quinn’s FRANKENSTELLA has form figures in big fields (10+ runners) of 1141 (3-4), including a C&D win. She could creep into it late under James Sullivan in a race sure to be run to suit. Rain would increase confidence.
MONTE FORTE – York 5.20 (0.5pt e/w – 25-1 bet365, Will Hill, BetVictor, Pari Match)
Kevin Ryan won this two years ago and also saddled the 33-1 second last year, who was unlucky to bump into the well -handicapped Flaming Rib (now rated 18lb higher). MONET FORTE’s low draw could be advantageous and he’s worth a punt at a big price on his handicap debut.
Since 2010, we could have bet all of the yard’s nursery runners (67 winners from 458 bets) and made a profit of £33.94. Backing only the geldings and fillies improves the profit to £81.86.
