Top tipster Andrew Mount found 14-1 (from 20-1) Hamilton winner Austrian Theory on Tuesday and has three selections at Musselburgh on Wednesday. UCCELLO – 2.40 Musselburgh (1pt each-way – 14-1 bet365, 12-1 generally)
Any race featuring the hard-to-win-with Termonator is always worth a second look, especially when he’s trading as the 7-4 favourite. Getting going too late was his trademark on the all-weather last winter and he’s found one too good under more prominent tactics the last twice.
He scraped home in first-time blinkers at Newcastle in December 2020 but is zero from 18 since, finishing second on no less than seven occasions. His seven opponents are nothing special either, but UCCELLO makes each-way appeal given his solid form on right-handed tracks and the good recent form of the Micky Hammond yard.
His two runs over trip and track produced a 20-1 fourth (beaten less than two lengths) and a 13-2 third, and he was beaten far when a 10-1 fourth at Hamilton last time.
GWEEDORE – 3.15 Musselburgh (1pt each-way – 8-1 generally, though take Sky Bet’s 15-2 with an extra place if you have access to that firm)
I tipped On A Session for the Lincoln Trial Handicap at Wolverhampton last spring when he made his debut for David Barron and he finished a close second at 11-2 off a mark of 91. However, fast forward 15 races and he’s still to win for his current yard but is only down to a mark of 89 thanks to a touch of seconditis.
He’s already been backed from 100-30 into 9-4 and has to be taken on again. I considered Manigordo, though the 4-5mm of rain forecast from late morning could be a problem and he’s never really convinced at this trip. He’s hardly prolific either, having scored just twice from 30 starts, with one of those wins at odds of 2-11.
More interesting is Katie Scott’s GWEEDORE, who is well drawn in stall 1. He certainly knows how to win (seven from 29) and impressed me when scoring over trip and track on his reappearance in April as he got no peace on the front end. Had we bet him in handicaps here and at Ayr we’d have won seven of our 16 bets and made a profit of £21.00. He doesn’t need to lead and with plenty of pace out wide, he’ll hopefully just sit second or third on the rail before pouncing late. Confidence will increase if the forecast rain arrives.
RORY – 4.20 Musselburgh (1.5pts win – 100-30 bet365)
RORY was only fourth of seven when the 9-4 favourite here on Monday but he had the worst of the draw in stall 1 and blew the start. The first three home came from the three highest draws and given the likely strong pace in today’s line-up, he should have the race run to suit.
Apache Star (stall 6 of 6) likes to blast off in front and three of the other four are unlikely to be too far away. Stall 5 looks useful – provided the gaps appear – and he can get the better of stablemate Primo’s Comet, the only other hold-up horse in the race. I’ve saved on that one and done the forecast.
