STATE SECRETARY was quite an eyecatcher in a 1m Yarmouth handicap last month, finishing a tenderly-handed 25-1 fourth and pulling eight lengths clear of the fifth.
Quite how the handicapper saw fit to drop him 2lb is a mystery and he looks very interesting here from what looks the best of the draw in stall 8 of 8.

BRAZEN ARROW – 4.48 Yarmouth (1pt win, 10/1 Paddy Power, Betfair, 9/1 generally)
BRAZEN ARROW went into the tracker after his beaten favourite effort at Southwell in February when we last saw him. Christine Dunnett’s four-year-old had little chance from stall 9 of 9 that day in a race dominated by low draws (first three drawn 3, 1 and 2).
Toptime, best of the high draws in fourth, was a 12-1 winner at Thirsk next time and the horses in fifth (stall 4) and sixth (stall 5) placed at 28-1 and 18-1 on their next outings. Cool Spirit, last of nine from stall 7, won two of his next three starts and the form looks solid.
The 117-day break is a slight concern, but he looks to have the best of the draw in stall 12 of 12 and will appreciate the step back up to 6f.

DEEVIOUS BEAU – 5.50 Hamilton (1pt each-way, 11/2 bet365, 11/4 generally)
Contrary to popular belief, it is rarely advantageous to be drawn high and race down the stands’ side in sprint handicaps at Hamilton. I’m especially keen to oppose the high draws in this 6f contest as the stalls are on the stands’ side and there could be a pace burn-up towards the rail, with How Bizarre (stall 10 of 10) and Dirchill (stall 8) likely to go hard from the outset.
This could set things up nicely for those hold-up horses drawn in stalls 1, 2, 3 and 4 and I’ll certainly be perming them in forecast/tricast combinations. The one I like for win purposes is DEEVIOUS BEAU (stall 1), who caught the eye against the bias when fifth of 13 in a 5f apprentice handicap at Musselburgh last Sunday.
He was well drawn in stall 12 but a slow start ruined his prospects and he had to switch widest of all for a run. He made good late headway but was still just under six lengths down at the line, doing second best of those to come from off the pace.
The drop to 5f was also against him – he won over an extra furlong at Chelmsford for today’s jockey on his penultimate start – and he makes each-way appeal despite a 0-11 turf score.
