Andrew Mount's Best Bets - Thursday, March 25

Top tipster Andrew Mount has three bets at Chepstow and Ludlow on Thursday

WICKED WILLY – (1.45 Ludlow, 1pt each-way – 12/1)

WICKED WILLY tends to come good in the early months of the calendar year and is especially effective right-handed. When racing this way round from January to March his record reads 1121433172 (4-10) for a profit of £22.10 to a £1 level stake at SP. He provided us with an each-way return in a selling hurdle at Leicester last time – finishing second at 11-1 – and he’s 9lb lower than when scoring at Kempton on March 16th 2019, the last time he ran in a handicap hurdle during his peak period.

GOODNIGHT CHARLIE – (2.07 Chepstow, 1.5 pts win – 15/4)

GOODNIGHT CHARLIE went into the tracker despite pulling up in the Sussex National in early January, as her forcing style was at a huge disadvantage that day. I put her up as a bet at Warwick next time but she was pulled up again (28-1) and also ran poorly when reverting to hurdles at the same venue a few weeks later. However, she bounced back to form in a 3m5f handicap chase at Warwick last time, making the running after being backed from 25-1 into 12-1 and finding only the progressive seven-year-old Volcano too good. Best in the spring – her seven career wins have come between March 10th and May 15th – she’ll relish today’s extended 3m6f trip and get bet the better of fellow front-runner Dancing Shadow who is on a losing run of 17.

ROOTLESS TREE – (3.07 Chepstow, 1pt each-way – 12/1)

ROOTLESS TREE showed improved form in first-time cheekpieces at Southwell last time, finishing 16 lengths behind the winner in a 40-1 sixth of 16. He shaped as though the step up from two miles would suit and it’s interesting to note that trainer Christian Williams does well with horses in second-time cheekpieces, scoring with six of the 17 qualifiers (35.3% strike-rate) for a profit of £23.75 to a £1 level stake at SP. He’s been dropped 4lb to a mark of just 98 for his latest effort, 25lb lower than his peak mark for previous handler Nigel Twiston-Davies, and with his trainer in such good form he looks worth chancing at juicy odds.
