SILVER GUNN – (3.15 Nottingham, 1pt each-way – 17/2)
Three-year-olds have a good record in this 1m2f Class 3 handicap, taking five of the last seven renewals. In the past ten years they’ve accounted for five winners and four places from just 29 runners, compared to five wins and six places from 92 runners for older horses.
SILVER GUNN’s patient running style isn’t always ideal for Nottingham but he did win over course and distance in the first-time hood back in July and has since won in a big field on good to soft ground at Sandown. He disappointed at Haydock last time, racing very freely, though he has a touch of the ‘OXOs’ and it’s interesting to note that his record immediately following a defeat this year reads 111 (3-3), compared to 529 (0-3) following a win.
Raceform gave him a big speed figure for the Sandown win and he has good claims of bouncing back to that sort of form granted a strong gallop.

SINGLE – (4.15 Bath, 0.5 pt each-way – 28/1)
The four previous winners of this 1m6f Listed race (I’m ignoring the 2017 renewal when it was run at Yarmouth) came from off the pace and it looks set to be run at a strong gallop again.
SINGLE has a heap to find at the weights but Mick Channon’s four-year-old has the speed figure to suggest that she could sneak into the frame here. She was a big eyecatcher at Ascot in July, doing best of those to come from off the pace when third in a 2m handicap on fast ground.
She’s run well in defeat since – doing best of the closers when runner-up to Eileendover at Newmarket, sitting too close to the early pace when a three-length fourth at Goodwood, meeting trouble and doing second best of the closers when a 22-1 fifth of 13 at Haydock and, last time out, going down by just two lengths when a 16-1 fourth to Sea Sylph in a Class 2 Goodwood handicap.
The winner, who reopposes here is trading at around 7-1 whereas Single is four times her price and is worth a speculative each-way interest to small stakes.

WRENTHORPE – (4.25 Nottingham, 1pt each-way – 9/1)
WRENTHORPE tends to come to hand at this time of year and is taken to land this 5f handicap for the third straight year. When racing in Class 3 or lower company during October or November his record reads 2311121 (4-7) for a profit of £28.25 to a £1 level stake at SP.
The Bryan Smart yard is in good form and there should be enough ‘soft’ in the ground to suit.
