ELECTRIC LOVE – (4.30 Nottingham, 1pt win, 6/1)
Centre to stands’ side is usually the place to be on the straight course at Newcastle, making life difficult for those drawn very low. Tom Clover’s ELECTRIC LOVE (stall 1 of 11) was drawn out wide in a Racing League handicap earlier this month and did well to finish just over two lengths behind the winner in fifth place.
Progeny of Equiano tend to be more effective on turf and this run took the three-year-old’s record on synthetics to 0-3. Her turf record stands at 24113 (2-5), with the latest defeat by just half a length after blowing the start. Her most recent win came in a field of 12 runners and she looks set to encounter the required strong gallop in this 11-runner contest.

BARENBOIM – (4.50 Catterick, 1pt win, 4/1)
BARNEBOIM caught the eye at Lingfield on his penultimate start when fourth after making the running in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail and clocked a fast time when second to Liberated Lad at Windsor next time.
That one, who reoppose here, was short-headed off a 5lb higher mark at Hamilton next time and Barenboim looks value to reverse the form. Trainer Michael Bell has a great record here, scoring with 18 of his 52 runners since 2013 (34.6% strike-rate) for a profit of £29.68 to a £1 level stake at SP.

ENGLISH SPIRIT – (7.30 Kempton, 1pt win, 6/1)
ENGLISH SPIRIT displayed some ability on his debut when beaten less than five lengths at 28-1 in a 7f Lingfield novice and had little chance against a strong pace bias when upped to a mile at the same venue next time. Switched to turf at Newbury for his third outing, he showed up well for a long way before weakening into midfield to finish just under nine lengths behind the winner at odds of 125-1.
I thought he was worth a bet on his handicap debut on Lingfield’s turf in early June, but he disappointed over 6f in first-time cheekpieces. We didn’t see him for another 85 days when an eyecatcher under a patient ride from the worst of the draw in a 6f Kempton handicap (wore a first-time hood) and he ran another big race at Leicester on his latest outing, going down by three-quarters of a length in third.
He was the only one in the first eight who raced up with the pace and today could finally be the day. Heather Main has done well with this family – all four of English Spirit’s half-siblings have won – and he looks the value play against the favourite.
