BARNEY’S BAY, fifth, 6f handicap, Carlisle, Monday, May 22nd
They went off hard in the 6f Penrith Handicap at Carlisle last Monday, with the first three finishers described by the Racing Post as ‘travelled strongly, held up in rear’, ‘held up in rear, still plenty to do halfway’ and ‘took keen hold, held up in rear’. BARNEY’S BAY weakened into fifth place after racing prominently and his three-and-a-half length defeat was a solid effort in the circumstances.
BIG EVS, second, 5f restricted novice stakes, Redcar, Monday, May 29th
BIG EVS showed good early speed on his debut in the Celebration Of Tom Hamilton’s Life EBF Restricted Novice Stakes and managed to get across from his poor high draw in stall 12 of 14 to race on the far side where the ground was quickest. He was worn down close home by previous winner Hala Emaraaty and looks sure to find a race in the near future.
DARK JEDI, 12th, 1m4f handicap, York, Wednesday, May 17th
DARK JEDI finished well beaten in the Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Jorvik Handicap but he’s now 0-8 at York and tends to come good in high summer, landing five of his 20 starts from June to August for a profit of £33.00 to a £1 level stake at SP.
GALERON, fifth, 1m Group 1, Curragh, Saturday, May 27th
GALERON, fourth at 150-1 in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket earlier this month, was only fifth in the Irish equivalent last Saturday but the Charles Hills-trained 16-1 shot did best of those ridden patiently on a track that was massively favouring early pace. Ascot will suit his patient running style and he could go well at big odds in the St James’s Palace Stakes.
LIBRA TIGER, fifth, 6f handicap, Doncaster, Saturday, May 20th
LIBRA TIGER was only fifth of 16 in the Stuart Hancock A1 Garden Buildings Ltd Handicap but his patient running style was at a disadvantage and he hung to the right throughout. Third-placed As If By Chance, who fared best of the hold-up horses, won at Windsor on Monday, and he can be supported next time. He’s entered in the 8.45 at Lingfield on Saturday night.
NEWYORKSTATEOFMIND, seventh, 6f handicap, Carlisle, Monday, May 22nd
NEWYORKSTATEOFMIND finished last of seven in the Penrith Handicap but made the running at a fast pace in a race set up for the closers. This effort is safe to ignore, and he’ll be of interest back on the all-weather. He’s four from 18 on synthetics but just one from 33 on turf.
STRAITS OF MOYLE, sixth, 6f handicap, Carlisle, Monday, May 22nd
STRAITS OF MOYLE was sent off as the 2-1 favourite for the Penrith Handicap but sat too close to the front end in a pace-collapse race. Jockey Oisin Orr reported that the gelding ‘ran flat’ and he’s worth another chance.

VINCE LOMBARDI, third, 5f handicap, Pontefract, Friday, May 26th
VINCE LOMBARDI, penalised for his 6f Hamilton win seven days earlier, was sent off as the even-money favourite for the 5f Kim Wilde Performing Live After Racing Handicap but only finish a modest third. The drop in trip was probably to blame and he’s best judged on his form figures in 6f handicap on turf of 14101 (3-5).
WESTMORIAN, fourth, 6f handicap, Carlisle, Monday, May 22nd
WESTMORIAN, like Barney’s Bay (see above), sat too close to the strong early pace in the 6f Penrith Handicap and did really well to finish in fourth place. Both his wins came from the front in small fields on Tapeta and he should find another race on this evidence.
YAZAMAN, sixth, 6f handicap, Thirsk, Saturday, May 20th
Centre to stands’ side was the place to be in the 50K ITV7 Weekly Jackpot Handicap, with the first five home drawn 14, 11, 10, 16 and 13 of 20. YAZAMAN (stall 2) fared best of those drawn in single figures and will be of interest next time.
