ASJAD (third, 7f heritage handicap, Ascot, Saturday, October 1st)
ASJD did nothing but drift (12-1 out to 22-1) after I put him up on GG’s Weekend Watch on Thursday but ran an absolute blinder to finish third of the 17 runners in the 7f Peroni Nastro Azzurro Challenge Cup. Racing keenly in rear, he was denied a clear run for what seemed an eternity before staying on strongly to finish two lengths behind Escoabr. He left the impression that he would have gone close with a smoother passage and now has form figures of 11113 (4-5) on officially good to soft or softer going.
BAREFOOT ANGEL (fourth, 6f Listed race, Redcar, Saturday, October 1st)
The usual low-draw bias was evident on the straight course at Redcar last Saturday and those berthed in double-figures had a tough task in the 6f William Hill Two Year Old Trophy. Richard Fahey’s Barefoot Angel (stall 11 of 16) had caused a 20-1 upset in Group 3 company at Ayr on her latest outing and proved that was no fluke with a solid fourth to Cold Case. Switched left towards the far rail by Oisin Orr on leaving the stalls she was outpaced in last place after two furlongs and had a mountain to climb at halfway. However, she took off when switched back towards the centre of the track, staying on strongly when in the clear to grab fourth. She was almost four lengths behind the winner, but this was a cracking effort given the torturous route she took.
ENFJAAR (won, 7f maiden, Newmarket, Saturday, October 1st)
Roger Varian’s ENFJAAR, hooded for his debut, made a winning start in the Weatherbys Prince And Design Maiden Stakes despite coming late down the middle of the track when it helped to race prominently against the nearside rail. He was value for more than the neck winning margin and this Derby entry can be followed until beaten.
Today’s Racing
MALTESE FALCON (second, 7f novice stakes, Redcar, Saturday, October 1st)
Plenty of the fancied horses for the 7f racingtv.com/freetrial EBF Stallions Novice Stakes were drawn high, leaving the way clear for 11-4 second favourite LADY MOJITO to make all against the far side rail from stall 1 of 14. She was followed home by runners drawn 13, 4, 2 and 3, with runner-up MALTESE FALCON (stall 13) the outlier. The Rebecca Menzies-trained newcomer attracted strong support into 7-1 and, though five and a half lengths down at the line, this was a solid first effort after racing wide under a patient ride.
PROSPECT (second, 5f handicap, Redcar, Saturday, October 1st)
I wrote up PROSPECT after his best-of-the-high-draws fifth in a big-field 5f handicap at Ayr last month and he ran a similar race in the Watch RacingTV Free For 31 Days Handicap at Redcar last Saturday when runner-up from a poor draw (first three drawn 4, 11 and 3 of 14. His patient style was also at a disadvantage in yet another Redcar race in which the winner made all and he’ll surely find a race before the turf season is over.
ROHAAN (won, 6f Group 3, Ascot, Saturday, October 1st)
ROHAAN took his Ascot record to 11011 (4-5) when landing the 6f Group 3 John Guest Bengough Stakes by a length and a half from the likeable Summerghand. He travelled supremely well in the rear and could be called the winner from some way out. He could return here on Champions Day.
SO SAVVY (fifth, 6f handicap, Chelmsford, Thursday, September 29th)
Mick Appelby has traditionally done well at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards and though the profits have dried up in recent years it still pays to take note when the money arrives. The interesting aspect about the gamble on 11-4 favourite SO SAVVY in the 6f Firework Spectacular at Chelmsford City Racecourse Handicap last Thursday was that it took place despite the four-year-old’s poor draw in stall 9 of 10. He broke smartly and got across to the far rail but had nothing left at the finish, going down by one length in fifth behind runners drawn 3, 6, 2 and 1. He holds entries at Newcastle and Chelmsford later this week.
THE NAVIGATOR (fifth, 2m handicap hurdle, Kelso, Sunday, October 2nd)
THE NAVIGAOR is best late off a strong pace and last Sunday’s Welcome To Family Day Handicap Hurdle at Kelso was simply not run to suit. The winner (‘in touch with leaders’), runner-up (‘in touch with leaders’) and fourth (‘prominent, led 1st’) were never far away and his five-length fifth was worthy of an upgrade.
VENTURA DIAMOND (tenth, 6f Group 3, Ascot, Saturday, October 1st)
Stall 13 of 13 made life troublesome for VENTRUA DIMAOND in the Group 3 Bengough Stakes and, though Friday’s rain was welcome, she could have done with plenty more. Richard Fahey’s filly raced virtually alone towards the stands’ side in the early stages and couldn’t pick up, finishing a modest tenth. She usually thrives at this time of year when the mud’s flying and I still think she can have a say in the Champions Sprint if the ground turns heavy.
VICTORY ECHO (third, 2m7.5f handicap hurdle, Hexham, Friday, September 30)
VICTORY ECHO has form figures on his second completed start each term of 1115 (3-4) and I thought he would need last Friday’s run in the Diane Pearce The Yorke Family Sandgrounder Handicap Hurdle after a 141-day break. He held on for an 80-1 third after pressing the early pace and could make a quick return to action over the same trip and track in the 3.04 race this Saturday.
