ANGLE LAND (second, 5f handicap, Chelmsford, Thursday, November 3rd)
The pace collapsed in the 5f Racing Welfare Handicap at Chelmsford last Thursday, allowing 50-1 shot Cabeza De Llave to come from the back of the field and score. The third and fourth were also ridden patiently and the one to take from the race was the always-prominent runner-up ANGLE LAND. He’s entered in the 8.30 at Wolverhampton on Saturday night.
DON ALVARO (won, 2m4f conditional jockeys’ handicap chase, Wincanton, November 5th)
DON ALVARO impressed in landing the Supporting Wincanton Town Youth Football Club Conditions Jockeys’ Handicap Chase in a time that compared very favourably to the other chases on the card. The Paul Nicholls-trained six-year-old was taking a huge step forward from last month’s seasonal/chase debut at Newton Abbot where he trailed home a 50-length last of four. It’s possible that a right-handed track is the key, as his record this way round reads 32311 (2-5), compared to 025504 (0-6) when racing left-handed.
FAVORI DE SIVOLA (fourth, 3m1.5f handicap chase, Warwick, Tuesday, November 1st)
FAVORI DE SIVOLA looked in need of the outing ahead of his reappearance 26-length fourth in the Happy Birthday Julian Watson Handicap and this run is safely ignored. Softer going will help and he may also appreciate the return to a right-handed track, as his four wins for Nick Williams came at Wincanton (twice), Taunton and Exeter.
HABANERO STAR (fourth, 9,4f handicap, Wolverhampton, Monday, October 31st)
The pace held up in division two of the 9.4f Fallon’s Fancies Expert Tips By BetUK Handicap, with winner Lethal Touch making all and runner-up Big Dutchie in second place throughout. Third-home Broughton’s Mission was never more than a few lengths off the early pace and the one to take from the race was fourth-placed HABAENRO STAR, who came from the rear. Gay Kelleway’s five-year-old has yet to score away from Brighton or Yarmouth but there’s an all-weather win in her on this evidence.
HARRY’S HALO (won, 6f nursery, Doncaster, Saturday, November 5th)
HARRY’S HALO made it two wins (28-1 and 11-1) from two starts since gelded when landing the Phone Betting At Goodwin Racing 08000 421 321 Nursery Handicap. The winning margin was one length, but it could have been more and he’s one to look forward to on slow turf next year.
HAWTHORN COTTAGE (won, 2m4f conditional jockeys’ handicap chase, Warwick, Tuesday, November 1st)
HAWTHORN COTTAGE was allowed to dominate in the 2m4f British Gypsum’s Fastest Finish Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase and sauntered home 30 lengths to the good. Since making her debut over fences, her chase record in cheekpieces reads 1141 (3-4), with the sole defeat excusable as it came too soon (12 days). Good to softer or faster going and small fields are ideal.
HOWYOULIKETHAT (won, 1m handicap, Dundalk, Friday, November 4th)
HOWYOULIKETHAT came from the rear to comfortably land the 14-runner 1m William Hill Pick Your Places Handicap. Hilary McLoughlin’s five-year-old has a great record in handicaps over this course and distance, recording form figures of 143131 (3-6). He can win again when given another big field/strong pace scenario.
RED ROOKIE (non-runner, Carlisle, Monday, November 7th)
RED ROOKIE, sent off at 80-1 for the Arkle last season, was in the process of running a respectable race behind Edwardstone when tipping up late on. I’d hoped to see him in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter last Friday, but he missed that to wait for Carlisle on Monday, a meeting that was abandoned. His record right-handed stands at 11F1 (3-4) and he should pay his way again this term.
ROUDEMANTAL (won, 1m handicap, Newcastle, Friday, November 4th)
ROUDEMENTAL went into my tracker after his third place over the round mile at Doncaster in mid-May, doing really well to finish so close under a forcing ride on a track that was favouring more patient running styles. He finished well beaten on turf the next twice but returned to form when landing the Spreadex Sports Bet £10 Get £100 Handicap at Newcastle last week. Hugo Palmer’s 14-1 shot was prominent throughout, taking up the running over a furlong out, and had enough in reserve to hold off the closers (the next five finishers came from midfield or further back). He was more than five lengths clear of the next prominent racer to finish and there should be plenty more to come on the all-weather this winter.
