CAVENDISH (sixth, 1m4f handicap, Newcastle, Tuesday, September 20th)
Making the running on the round course (1m2f+) on Newcastle’s Tapeta surface usually ends up in defeat and last Tuesday’s 1m4f Download The At The Races App Handicap was a typical example, with the first three finishers described by the Racing Post as ‘held up in rear’, ‘raced wide, midfield’ and ‘towards rear’. CAVENDISH weakened into a 9-1 sixth of 13 after making the early running, a respectable effort in the circumstances, and he can be supported on a track kinder to such tactics next time.
DIG TWO (fourth, 6f handicap, Chelmsford, Saturday, September 24th)
DIG TWO, whose three wins have come in small fields (eight, five and four ran) looked interesting when facing just seven rivals in the 6f 0-90 handicap at Chelmsford last Saturday. However, stall 8 of 8 made life difficult, as did a bump at the start, and he could never get involved from midfield. The three who beat him were up with the pace throughout and he’s worth another chance.
DUTCH SCHULTZ (non-runner, 2m handicap, Curragh, Sunday, September 25)
DUTCH SCHULTZ was a reserve runner and failed to get into the Irish Cesarewitch last Sunday, but he could be one to keep on-side during October. Gavin Cromwell’s lightly-raced five-year-old has scored twice in his career – on 23rd October 2020 when trained by Ralph Beckett and on 19th October last year when bolting up by eight lengths in a 1m6f handicap at Gowran Park. His 20-1 third to Echoes In Rain at Galway looks useful in light of the winner’s narrow second to Waterville in Sunday’s big race and he can be backed next time, whether on the Flat or over hurdles.
HAYMAKER (third, 6f handicap, Pontefract, Thursday, September 22nd)
They went hard up front in the 6f Class 4 handicap and set it up for the closers. Winner Golden Apollo and runner-up It Just Takes Time both came from the rear, with HAYMAKER the one to take from the race despite finishing almost five lengths back in third. Hughie Morrison’s three-year-old had three lengths to spare over the next prominent racer – fifth-placed Cottam Lane – and can go two places better next time. He’s entered in the 4.20 at Ascot this Friday.
INDICATION ROCKET (second, 1m2f handicap, Newcastle, Monday, September 26th)
INDICATION ROCKET was in front plenty soon enough in the 1m2f Class 6 nursery handicap, taking up the running after just two furlongs. Like most pacesetters on Newcastle’s round course, he was picked up late on but was only half a length down at the line and pulled over four lengths clear of the third. He has now caught the eye in both handicap outings and will surely find a race in the coming weeks.

Mon 26 Sep 2022KENTUCKY ROSE (second, 6f handicap, Hamilton, Sunday, September 18th)
KENTUCKY ROSE got involved in a battle for the early lead and it’s to her credit that she managed to finish second (albeit three lengths behind the winner), as the winner, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth all came from off the pace. She was a massive seven lengths clear of the next prominent racer and can go one better soon.
PRINCEVILLE (won, 5f handicap, Lingfield, Tuesday, September 20th)
PRINCEVILLE started as the 5-2 favourite for this 5f nursery, but he still impressed me by winning around the inside of the track where the surface usually rides slowest. He was a little keen in the early stages and could still have more to offer this year before presumably heading to Dubai.
NEW PURSUIT (won, 8.5f handicap, Epsom, Sunday, September 25)
NEW PURSUIT made it three wins from three starts at Epsom when landing a punt (2-1 favourite from the previous day’s 5-1) in the Henry Dorling Handicap over the extended mile. His other two Epsom wins came on his seasonal debuts and he’s one to remember when he reappears next term. His record away from Epsom stands at 433502 (0-6), albeit he was only beaten by a head when runner-up at Windsor.
TANTASTIC (fourth, 6f handicap, Southwell, Wednesday, September 28th)
John Wainwright’s 18-1 poke TANTASTIC ran a blinder to finish a best-of-the-prominent-racers fourth of 11 in the 6f Class 6 handicap. The four-year-old raced prominently before taking up the runner over a furlong out, seeing off the other pace horses but getting swamped inside the final furlong by runners described by the Racing Post as ‘dwelt start, towards rear of midfield’, ‘midfield’ and ‘slowly into stride, towards rear of midfield’. The fifth, sixth and seventh also came from off the pace and he had three lengths to spare over the next prominent racer.
TURNTABLE (won, 1m1f handicap, Newmarket, Friday, September 23rd)
The strong early pace played into the handicaps of course expert TURNTABLE, who scored by two lengths at odds of 11-1. Chris Wall’s six-year-old now has form figures on the Rowley Mile of 41121 (3-5), with the first defeat at 40-1 when unsuited to first-time headgear. He could run here again before the season’s out.
