ANANDA (won, 6f fillies’ novice stakes, Yarmouth, Thursday, September 15th)

ANANDA only finished fourth of the nine runners, five lengths behind winner Lose Yourself, when 7-4 favourite for a 7f fillies’ novice contest at Newmarket on August 26th but fared much better over this shorter trip. She broke smartly to sit in second place in the early exchanges, racing a little freely, then moved into the lead just over two furlongs out and saw off the stern challenge of Pinafore to score by two lengths. The time was fast, and she looks Group class.

ASTRAL BEAU (won, 7f handicap, Newmarket, Saturday, September 17th)

ASTRAL BEAU lost her way slightly after her 50-1 debut win at Leicester but bounced back in cheekpieces on the July course last month and made it two wins from two Newmarket runs with this Rowley Mile success. She’s clearly suited by stiff tracks and her 7f record now reads 14411 (3-5), improving to 11 (2-2) in cheekpieces.

AZURE ANGEL (third, 6f fillies’ novice stakes, Yarmouth, Thursday, September 15th)

Roger Varian’s newcomer AZURE ANGEL was backed from 17-2 into 6-1 and ran a race full of promise. Held up in rear, she ran green but took off when switched towards the nearside to finish best of the hold-up horses in a six-length third of ten. The two who beat her look very useful and the time was quick.

AZURE BLUE (fourth, 6f handicap, York, Sunday, September 4th)

I’m still playing catch-up with tracker horses from the first week of this month when I was on holiday and I didn’t want to leave out AZURE BLUE, who challenged away from where the action unfolded when fourth of 13 at York. She’s incredibly consistent, recording form figures of 3221512414 (3-10), improving to 1121 (3-4) in single-figure line-ups. She’s in at Newmarket this Thursday and, with luck, the race will cut up.

BRAVE KNIGHT (fourth, 8.6f maiden, Wolverhampton, Tuesday, September 13th)

BRAVE KNIGHT started at 50-1 for this 8.6f Class 5 maiden but showed promise in fourth place. Sir Mark Prescott’s juvenile fared best of those ridden patiently behind runners priced at 7-4f, 3-1 and 9-2 and will be something to bet on when handicapping over a longer trip. The son of Sir Percy is entered in the Derby but his opening mark of 74 suggests any trip to Surrey is likely to include Lingfield rather than Epsom.

CARRIGILLIHY (won, 1m4f handicap, Pontefract, Thursday, September 15th)

CARRIGILLIHY caused a 25-1 upset in the 1m4f Class 4 handicap to take his record at Pontefract to 111 (3-3), compared to form figures elsewhere of 6402315326453684208 (1-19). His sole success away from Pontefract came when 30-100 favourite for a four-runner Ripon handicap last July and he only won that thanks to the intervention of the stewards.

FANCY MAN (second, 1m3f Group 3, Newbury, Saturday, September 17th)

Richard Hannon’s FANCY MAN found the ground at York way too fast when down the field in the Ebor last month and it would also have been quicker than ideal when a neck second to Stay Alert in the Group 3 formerly known as the Arc Trial at Newbury last Saturday. This was a fine frontrunning effort – the winner, third, fourth and fifth all came from midfield or further back – and he was three lengths ahead of the next prominent racer to finish, sixth-placed Kemari. His record on Polytrack or good to soft/softer turf reads 1213211355 (4-10), with the latest defeat at 20-1 in a 17-runner handicap.

FAST AND LOOSE (second, 6f handicap, Ayr, Friday, September 16th)

First-time headgear often does the trick where Kevin Ryan runners are concerned and FAST AND LOOSE ran a cracker in the first-time blinkers in the Bronze Cup, going down by a short head in second at 40-1. There could be more to come when he races left-handed again, as his three runs in that direction have produced form figures of 212 (1-3), with the defeats by a neck and a head. His sole all-weather outing came on Newcastle’s Tapeta, but he’s bred to improve for the switch to Polytrack.

GROUNDBREAKER (fourth, 1m2f handicap, Newbury, Saturday, September 17th)

GROUNDBREAKER recorded a career-best RPR (Racing Post Rating) of 103 when a 20-1 fourth to Marching Army in the Dubai Duty Free Handicap. Fitted with a tongue-tie for the first-time, he emerged best of those ridden prominently and should find another race before the season is over.

PINK CRYSTAL (second, 5.5f Listed race, Ayr, Friday, September 16th)

Gale Force Maya was not for passing in the Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies’ Stakes, but PINK CRYSTAL emerges with great credit for her runner-up effort from off the pace. She was only three-quarters of a length down at the line, taking her career record to 3221311252 (3-10). Like many fillies, she seems happiest in small fields and her record when faced with ten or fewer rivals stands at 21311 (3-5), improving to 11 (2-2) on turf.
