Andrew Mount's Horse Racing Tips - Aintree Grand National Festival Day 3, Saturday 11th April

Aintree’s Grand National card will kick off in all its splendour on Saturday lunchtime. Andrew Mount is heralding the big race with five selections at Aintree across the afternoon, including his tip in the Grand National at 4pm.

Grosvenor have a fabulous welcome offer for horse racing punters as they are offering Double The Odds to a maximum £10 stake.

Aintree Racing Tips (Saturday 11 April 2026)

The Grand National is the highlight of Saturday’s racing, with the eyes of the sporting world on Aintree at 4pm. Andrew has five selections at the Liverpool track for you to follow, including in the National itself.

1.20 Aintree – Good To Be Alive (0.5pt e/w – 20/1 Paddy Power, six places, 20/1 bet365 and Sky Bet, both five places) & Kaka’s Cousin (0.5pt e/w – 10/1 Paddy Power, six places, 10/1 Sky Bet, five places)

The Olly Murphy-trained Good To Be Alive has form figures for his current handler of 2212 (1-4) and the five-year-old recorded his career-best RPR (Racing Post Rating) when going down by a length and a quarter over 2m5f at Kelso last time, the longest trip he has contested. Today’s step up to 3m promises to suit and his patient style is usually an asset in this race.

Kaka’s Cousin was the big eyecatcher in the EBF Final at Sandown last month, finishing fourth and emerging clear best of those to race prominently (the Racing Post described him as “prominent, led narrowly before 2 out”). The other nine finishers in that 2m4.5f handicap hurdle were ridden patiently and all the other prominent racers were pulled up. I don’t usually like forward types in this contest, but his trainer won Friday’s 2m4f handicap hurdle with one who was up with the pace and it’s possible that he’ll be ridden with more restraint now stepping up to 3m for the first time since his point-to-point days.

13:20 William Hill Handicap Hurdle (Premier Handicap) (GBB Race)

2.30 Aintree – Lookaway (1pt e/w – 7/1 generally with the firms paying five places)

Skelton plot Mr Hope Street and Cruz Control, winner of this race for the last two years, will have their fans but I prefer the claims of Neil King’s Lookaway who fits the trends for this 3m1f handicap chase.  Backing those in the top six in the weights who led or raced prominently in their prep race would have found seven of the last ten winners from 35 bets for a huge profit of £80.25 to a £l level stake at SP (expected winners = 3.38, A/E = 2.07). Konfusion and Leave Of Absence also qualify, but Lookaway never looked like getting beat when taking the Ladbrokes Trophy Handicap Chase at Kempton last time on his first try at this sort of trip since his point-to-point win and his two Aintree runs produced a 28-1 Grade 2 bumper win and a 20-1 third in a Grade 1 novices’ hurdle.

14:30 William Hill Handicap Chase (Registered As The Freebooter Handicap Chase) (Premier Handicap) (GBB)

3.05 Aintree – Lavida Adiva (0.5pt e/w – 50/1 Paddy Power, five places, 50/1 Sky Bet, bet365, four places)

Lavida Adiva challenged on the faster part of the track when chasing home Skelton handicap plot Supremely West in the Pertemps Final at last month’s Cheltenham festival, but I still want to side with her in the Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle. Ruth Jefferson’s progressive mare always needs her first two runs each season – form figures of 326834 (0-6) – but her record on her third or subsequent outing stands at 1332124121432 (4-13). They don’t always go fast enough for her in small-field mares-only contests but her last two runs – that Pertemps second of 24 and a 14-1 third in the Grade 2 Rendlesham Hurdle at Haydock – suggest that she might prove to a be a better horse in a better race and I can see her staying on into the frame yet again.

15:05 Jet2 Liverpool Hurdle (Grade 1) (GBB Race)

4.00 Aintree – Johnnywho (0.5pt e/w – 12/1 generally)

I’m no big fan of the Grand National as a betting medium since they’ve made the fences so much easier to negotiate and reduced the safety limit, but I’ll have a token interest on Ultima Handicap Chase winner Johnnywho. Jonjo and A J O’Neill’s nine-year-old runs off his old mark of 146 (he’s now 6lb higher) and last time out winners have won six of the past ten Nationals (backing all 61 qualifiers returned a profit of £21.00 to a £1 level stake at SP), including six of the last eight. The downside is that he’s not trained in Ireland and his yard has a modest recent record with last time out winners (52 from 304 since 2022 for a loss of £138.44, expected winners = 67.35, A/E = 0.77) but he’s the right age (those aged ten plus are 0-164 in the past ten renewals) and 12-1 still looks too big.

16:00 Randox Grand National Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap) (GBB Race)
