1.50 Newmarket – MARHABA GHAIYYATH (1pt win – 8/1 Sky Bet, Paddy Power, 15/2 bet365)
Runners drawn in stall 7 or above are just one from 52 across the past ten renewals of this 1m2f heritage handicap and while we’ve only for eight set to go to post this afternoon, stall 8 could still prove troublesome for early favourite KING’S CHARTER. I much prefer the claims of stall 1 runner MARHABA GHAIYYATH, who represents in-form Charlie Johnston. His handler won this race two years ago with Killybegs Warrior and his father won this in 2015 and 2016. The three-year-old colt missed the break, met trouble in running and was always trapped wide when seventh of eight (9-4 favourite) at Musselburgh back in April but that effort is safely ignored and his other runs have returned form figures of 21121 (3-5), with the defeats by half a length and a head. He scored with plenty in hand at Redcar last time and is better equipped than most in this line-up to handle the likely fast going.
3.00 Newmarket – LIARI (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 Coral, Ladbrokes, BetVictor) & LIEBER POWER (0.5pt e/w – 10/1 William Hill, Sky Bet)
Pace angle LIARI (stall 3 of 13) looks well drawn to attack and could prove hard to pass in this 1m6f handicap. Michael Bell’s five-year-old was beaten miles in the 2m4f Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting last month but got into a fierce battle for the early lead and did far too much too soon. He made all over this trip on the Rowley Mile course here on his only other Flat outing for his current trainer and looks vastly over-priced.
LIEBER POWER (stall 1) is also nicely drawn and tends to perform best at this time of year. Andrew Balding’s five-year-old has form figures in July/August of 12122 (2-5), with the latest defeat at York’s Ebor meeting last summer when going down by a neck and doing best of the closers and best of those drawn very high. He runs off the same mark of 89 this afternoon.
4.10 Newmarket – VENETIAN PRINCE (1pt win – 11/1 bet365)
Andrew Balding won this 7f maiden with a newcomer two years ago and VENETIAN PRINCE might be able to repeat the dose. He’s the sixth foal of Group 1 winner Arabian Queen and two of his half-siblings won on their juvenile debut, including See The Fire. Another was second by a neck to Enfjaar here at Newmarket at the first time of asking before scoring easily second time out. There are a couple of reasons for siding with a newcomer, 1) those with experience have done little on the clock, and 2) some of the more interesting debutants are drawn very low, which has not been ideal, with stalls 1-5 having a combined record of just one winner from 50 runners in the past ten years (-£40.50 to a £1 level stake at SP).
