1.47 Newmarket – PEARL OF WINDSOR (1pt ew – 40-1 bet365, 33-1 generally)
PEARL OF WINDSOR (stall 1 of 12) landed a 5f Sandown maiden and 5f Chepstow novice before her 22-1 sixth of 14 in the Listed Harry Roseberry Stakes at Ayr, a race that is already working out well. Her patient running style was unhelpful that day and it was good to see two of the other hold-up horses boost that form – runner-up Uncle Don ran a blinder against the pace bias in the Two Year Old Trophy at Redcar last week and fourth-placed King Of Light was a winner at Haydock. The daughter of Pinatubo is up in trip to 6f for the first time today but stall 1 will be useful on recent evidence here and there are plenty of pace angles in opposition to help tow her into contention. I’ve saved on COTO DE CAZA (stall 12), third in the same Ayr race as Pearl of Windsor last time.

3.50 Chepstow – WAYFINDER (1pt win – 7-1 Coral, 13-2 generally)
Regular readers will know that I love a veterans’ handicap chase, and I have to admit to feeling a warm glow when I saw the entries for this race (winter is coming!). Ten-year-olds – the youngest age group eligible to take part – out-perform their older rivals and this age group has won seven of the nine running of this 2m7.5f contest (the two other winners were 11-year-olds). At the time of writing the front two in the betting were both aged 11 and that makes the Rebecca Curtis-trained ten-year-old WAYFINDER a value play. He loves this track, recording form figures of 12111PP2P (4-9), with two of the non-completions in the Welsh Grand National.
7.30 Dundalk – DANCING STEVE (1pt win – 16/1 bet365)
They went hard up front in the 1m Clieveragh Handicap at Listowel on September 23rd, and the race was set up for those ridden patiently, with the first five finishers described by the Racing Post as “slowly into stride, help up in midfield”, “midfield”, “held up in midfield”, “in rear” and “midfield”. There were five runners vying for the early lead, their speed touching 40mph, and four of them – ACADEMY WINNER, EASTERN WIND, DROP THE DIP and LILIKOI – dropped out of the back of the TV to fill the last four places. The exception was DANCING STEVE, whose ten-length seventh of 15 was a solid effort in the circumstances. He had eight lengths to spare over the next front-runner to finish and he can be excused his subsequent Down Royal flop as rain during the day changed the ground from good, to soft. The switch to the all-weather is unlikely to pose a problem and he’s worth a small bet. I’ve saved on the aforementioned Academy Winner.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Unlucky Horses & Eyecatchers are Over-Bet Next Time & Should be Avoided
Unlucky horses in-running are so often put into tracker immediately to try and find some value on them next time out. However, Andrew Mount analyses whether such horses take up too much of the market, and whether your bets are better placed elsewhere. For several years I wrote a weekly Eyecatchers column for GG.co.uk and…
