4.10 York – OVIEDO (1pt win, 12/1 BetVictor, 11/1 William Hill)
Originally, I was set to make Reach the bet in this 1m2f handicap after her eyecatching third from a difficult draw at the Dante meeting, but she tends to find trouble in fields of 12 or more runners and all roads for her might lead to the fillies’ handicap at the Ebor meeting, a race she won last year. More interesting is OVIEDO for Ed Bethell, who can be forgiven his last-of-six reappearance effort behind Passenger in Group 2 company at Chester. That run, his first since late September and first since a gelding operation, was clearly needed and he was a winner second time out last term. He also ran a blinder on his only previous visit to York, finding only Astro King too good in a Heritage Handicap over today’s trip and his yard has an eight from 29 record in handicaps with runners having their second start since gelded (+£4.21), including form figures of 11201 (3-5) with the last five qualifiers.
7.15 Goodwood – LYRAISA (1pt win – 5/1 generally)
With 5-2 favourite Cypriot Diaspora not certain to appreciate the quick ground and Gogo Yubari (9-2) yet to win on turf this 6f fillies’ handicap looks a good race to bet in. Hilltop (5-1) was reportedly unsuited by the undulations at Salisbury when an unplaced favourite last time, so could be another to take on given the undulating nature of Goodwood. Richard Hannon’s LYRAISA caught the eye when a 40-1 fourth to Rolica in a 7f fillies’ maiden at Newmarket’s Craven meeting, doing second best of those to come from off the pace when it paid to race on the front end thanks to the strong tailwind. I took a chance and bet her in a 7f novice contest at Newbury last time where she again acquitted herself well, finishing a 33-1 eighth of 19 and doing third best of the closers. She’s back in trip for her handicap debut today, her speed figures suggest she doesn’t need to improve much to take a hand and I like the booking of Hollie Doyle.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – The Lower the Class of Race, the Less Predictable the Result
After tackling Epsom’s unique course with his Myth Busters column last week, Andrew Mount returns this week in a more general setting, asking whether the quality of race affects the predictability of the result. I’ve listened to plenty of punters and pundits discuss their favourite races to bet in and the most common answer that…
