2.50 Epsom – ASHWIYAA (1.5pt win – 11/2 bet365, 9/2 generally)
It paid to race up with the pace in the 7f fillies’ handicap at Newmarket last Friday night in which Albeseeingyer (“prominent, led and ridden over 1f out” according to the Racing Post) came home five lengths clear of Tronido (“led but pestered”). George Boughey’s ASHWIYAA (“held up in rear”), a head back in third place on her first outing at the trip, had almost four lengths to spare over the next of the closers and it looks significant that she’s out again so quickly. The first-time cheekpieces could bring about improvement – her trainer’s handicappers, who were returning to the track within eight weeks of their latest outing are 15 from 94 in this headgear for a profit of £34.50 to a £1 level stake at SP – and the cut back to 6f looks a good idea. I’m also going to play her in a reversed forecast or Tote Exacta with last year’s winner Muscika.
4.10 Wolverhampton – POP DANCER (1pt win – 14/1 generally)
Aces Wild heads the market for this 5f handicap after his course and distance win 18 days ago but he benefitted from a strong pace that day thanks to Angle Land and Level Up (second and third) going off hard from the outset. The pace scenario looks very different this afternoon, with only Hollie Doyle’s mount POP DANCER likely to go forward from the outset. Tony Carroll’s veteran was a course and distance winner off a 3lb lower mark last November and tends to come to hand in the second half of the calendar year – he’s 0-19 from January to June but has won nine of his 33 starts from July to December for a profit of £32.45 to a £1 level stake at SP (the expected number of winners, based on their prices, was only 3.95 giving an actual over expected score of 2.28). He’s won seven of his 21 starts in 5f races in the second half of the year (+£33.45) and Hollie Doyle, who rides Wolverhampton so well in the warmer months (the track behaves very differently at this time of year), takes the ride.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Do ‘Gambling Yards’ Still Exist or Are They in the Past?
The world of horse racing no longer allows for the old-fashioned skulduggery that used to pervade the sport. However, in this week’s Myth Busters column, Andrew Mount asks whether “gambling yards” still exist, ones which love to land a touch with a well-backed favourite. When I first became interested in horse racing some stables were…
