3.15 York – SPIRITUAL (1pt win – 9/1 Paddy Power, Betfair)
SPIRITUAL overcame greenness to land a 7f fillies’ novice contest at Leicester last September and acquitted herself well at Newmarket just 17 days later, finishing fourth in the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes despite becoming unbalanced in the dip. It was slightly surprising to see her return to the Rowley Mile for her reappearance where once again she failed to handle the dip, finishing a six-length eight of ten in the Nell Gwyn. Her patient style was also at a big disadvantage that day and she looks a likely improver now racing on a flat track for the first time.
3.23 Newmarket – ARISAIG (1.5pt win – 9/2 generally)
ARISAIG was another who was inconvenienced by the pace bias at Newmarket’s Craven meeting last month, doing well to finish fourth under a patient ride (‘dwelt start, cajoled along early, towards rear, outpaced 4f out, kept on from 2f out’). The three who finished in front of her were described as ‘prominent, led 2f out’, ‘in touch with leaders’ and ‘prominent’ in the early stages and her 20-1 four-length defeat was worthy of a significant uplift. Lavender Hill Mob, the patiently-ridden night (beaten by 12 lengths) was a 12-1 winner at Goodwood next time and, with no tailwind to contend with this time, Arisaig can make it three wins from five career starts.
4.45 York – RED MIRAGE (1pt win – 10/1 Sky Bet, Paddy Power)
RED MIRAGE made a winning reappearance at Catterick last month to take his record on his first or second start each season to 11111401 (6-8). Jason Hart prefers Tropez Power, but James Doyle is an able replacement and he’s worth a small interest. His Catterick win came on his first start after wind surgery and there could be improvement to come.
