3.25 Nottingham – ANDALPROFIT (1pt win – 9/2 bet365)

ANDALPRFOIT has yet to win on turf but has had excuses in his three runs on the green stuff this term, meeting trouble when a two-length 14-1 sixth at Haydock in May, racing wide under patient tactics when ninth of 12 at Chester and doing too much too soon in a 7f handicap run to suit the closers at Doncaster. Nigel Tinkler’s three-year-old will appreciate the return to 6f and his trainer is showing a profit of £34.00 to a £1 level stake at SP in course and distance handicaps this century.

6.35 Hamilton – STRIKE RED (1pt e/w – 11/1 William Hill)

STRIKE RED has finished unplaced in all three starts at Epsom, so I’m happy to forgive his sixth of 11 there on Derby Day on his most recent turf outing, especially as he raced wide of the favoured rail. Richard Fahey’s veteran has a useful record on stiff tracks and his two previous runs at Hamilton produced a smooth two-length success and a three-quarters of a length fourth of ten. Nine of the last ten winners of the Scottish Stewards’ Cup had raced within the past three weeks and backing all 79 qualifiers returned a profit of £7.25 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£31.13 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). Those who had the benefit of a recent run and carried 9-01 or more were nine from 51 for a profit of £35.25 (+£58.81 at BSP). Strike Red is one of only three qualifiers in this evening’s 15-runner line-up (the others are Bergerac and Venture Capital) and I like his middle draw in stall 7.

7.35 Newmarket – ASMEN WARRIOR (1.5pt win – 5/2 Paddy Power)

In-form James Owen has a cracking record on the Flat (turf and all-weather) at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards, scoring with 19 of the 70 qualifiers (27.14% strike-rate) for a profit of £26.28 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those ranked in the top three based on career-best speed figures (according to Proform’s ratings) were ten from 22 for a profit of £26.50 (including eight from 13 on turf). ASMEN WARRIOR, who comfortably landed odds of 4-11 in a 1m2f Salisbury maiden last time on his final start for Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole, is the latest qualifier and could be in receipt of an easy lead. Owen has taken on two horses from Newland and Insole previously – Flying Panther and Overnight Oats – and while both were beaten on their yard debuts they went on to win on multiple occasions.

7.55 Pontefract – DREAM COMPOSER (1.5pt win – 13/2 William Hill)

With early pace from the likes of Twilight Jet, The Bell Conductor and Kodiac Thriller in this 5f handicap I’m hopeful that they’ll go quick enough for hold-up performer DREAM COMPOSER. The seven-year-old beat only one home at Chester on his latest assignment but that was no great surprise given his clear preference for undulating tracks highlighted by trainer James Evans (quoted in the Racing Post) after the gelding’s win at Epsom on Derby Day last year – “He’s pretty good at going up and down dale, because he’s won at Goodwood and places like that.” The six-year-old scored at Kempton back in June 2021 but his other nine wins have all come on turf tracks described as stiff and/or undulating, namely Carlisle, Pontefract (twice), Goodwood (twice), Ascot, Newmarket, Sandown and Epsom. His full record at this evening’s venue reads 512412 (2-6), improving to 5112 (2-4) at the minimum trip, with the latest defeat by a neck. REIGNING PROFIT has landed eight of his 30 starts at this 5f trip when returned to the track 14 days or sooner since his latest start, including a three from three haul here at Pontefract. He returned from a ten-day break to finished second by a neck (50-1) in a field of 17 at Ascot on “Super Saturday” and has been off the track for just six days here. He looks the biggest danger and I’ll be having a saver.
