3.45 Fakenham – CALLIN BATON ROUGE (2pt win – 13/8 generally)
Prominent racers enjoyed the best of things at Stratford’s meeting on September 7th and the only winner to come from midfield or further back was CALLIN BATON ROUGE, who sent off as the 13-8 favourite for the Power Utilities Group Handicap Hurdle. This progressive six-year-old scored by a very comfortable eight lengths to take her record since joining Charles and Adam Pogson from Warren Greatrex to 111 (3-3). She was often let down by her jumping for her old yard, who campaigned her mostly on soft/heavy going, but good ground has been the making of her and she looks a very shrewd purchase, having been claimed for £6,000 after May’s narrow second in a selling handicap hurdle at Cartmel. Today’s venue, similar in nature to Stratford (i.e. sharp and left-handed) will suit and the ground is perfect for her.

5.30 Newcastle – CAUSIN A COMMOTION (1pt win – 10/1 Paddy Power/Betfair)
Early pace dominated in the 5f Wolverhampton nursery won by Deal Maker on September 30th, with the winner, runner-up and third in the first three or four or four throughout. The Kevin Ryan-trained 11-5 favourite CAUSIN A COMMOTION was hampered on leaving the stalls and fared best of the closers in fourth (he also reportedly lost a shoe). That effort was worthy of an upgrade, and he could benefit from the first-time blinkers tonight.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Stratford Massively Favours Front-Runners So Don’t Back Hold-Up Horses This Saturday
It’s Champions Day at Ascot this Saturday (October 19th) but I want to concentrate on one of the supporting meetings – Stratford’s jumps fixture. In the past, I have rather unkindly referred to this venue as a “dog track” and a “front-runners’ benefit” where you simply need to back the horse who is likely to…
