3.05 Ayr – SOPHIA’S STARLIGHT (0.5pt e/w – 20/1 bet365, 16/1 generally)
SOPHIA’S STARLIGHT comes into this Listed contest with 2025 form figures of 800 (0-3) but all came in open company (i.e. against colts/geldings) and she’s best when tackling her own sex. Grant Tuer’s five-year-old has form figures in filles/mares races of 8111152902425711 (6-16) for a profit of £9.58 to a £1 level stake at SP. Five of the six wins came in handicaps but she finished a creditable 14-1 fourth (beaten 1.25 lengths) in a soft-ground 6f Doncaster Listed race on her final start last term where she had some useful sorts behind (she also did too much too soon in a race set up for the closers) and she went down by just a head in another soft-ground Listed race at Newmarket in October 2023. This 5.5f trip is on the sharp side (she bombed out in this race on unsuitably fast ground in 2023) and we may be getting there a race too soon but the soft ground will help and there’s compensation in the price. STAR OF MEHMAS has form figures in August/September of 1111 (4-4) but soft ground is an unknown factor, and her chance is covered in offers of around 3-1.
3.40 Ayr – MOSTAR DREAMS (1pt e/w – 15/2 William Hill, five places, 7/1 Ladbrokes, Coral and BetVictor, five places) & YAASER (16/1 generally, bet365 paying six places)
Nine of the last ten Bronze Cup winners were ridden patiently in their prep race and four of those (from just 28 runners) were stepping back in trip from 7f. The Jim Goldie-trained MOSTAR DREAMS (stall 3 of 25), ridden patiently by Paul Mulrennan when third in a 7f Class 3 handicap at Haydock last time, fits the bill and she looks well drawn on the far side as that’s where the pace is in this 6f contest. Stablemate ETERNAL SUNSHINE (stall 1), winner of the Portland at Doncaster last time, will likely take them along on the far rail and while she’ll be a tough nut to crack, I’m happy to side with the filly.
The other one to back is yet another Jim Goldie-trained runner – YAASER. Like Mostar Dreams he’s a hold-up horse who also ran over 7f last time, doing third best of the closers when seventh of 13 at Southwell on his latest start. The veteran has only had two runs in big-field 6f handicaps on turf, finishing a 14-1 fourth of 16 to Rohaan at Ascot in October 2023 and a 20-1 third of 18 to the impressive Almeraq over course and distance in June of this year. He’s 2lb lower today and the faster they go up front, the better his chance.
5.20 Ayr – EBONY MAW (1pt e/w – 8/1 bet365, SportingIndex & Spreadex, all paying four places)
EBONY MAW has failed to score from 21 starts in the May to August period but tends to come good in the autumn and is four from 19 in September/October (+£27.50 to a £1 level stake at SP). The Ewan Whillans-trained eight-year-old but bounced back to form when a half-length 14-1 of 14 over 1m5f at Hamilton on September 3rd, his first run for seven weeks, and should be spot on fitness-wise today. Three of his four handicap wins have come at Ayr and the more rain the better.
