2.15 Southwell – SIR BENEDICT (1pt win – 10/1 bet365, 8/1 generally)
I wrote the following in Racing & Football Outlook about SIR BENEDICT’s latest sixth at Beverley on July 15th…
“The ground on the inside of the course looked slowest and those who challenged wide enjoyed an advantage. Shane Gray’s mount BERKSHIRE PHANTOM attracted the attention of the stewards when third in the Happy 60th Julinda S Handicap after being repeatedly denied a clear run against the inside rail and won well backed when turned out at Redcar on Sunday. Gray hadn’t learnt his lesson by the time SIR BENEDICT lined up in the Malcolm Greenslade Doncaster LVA Stalwart Memorial Handicap, again taking the inside route and finding all the trouble going. Stella Barclay’s seven-year-old finished full of running in a 14-1 sixth and can be considered for a similar race next time.”
SIR BENEDICT, a dual course winner, has been found a weak contest on his return to the all-weather and looks over-priced.
3.05 Goodwood – KERDOS (1pt e/w – 8/1 Sky Bet, five places, 8/1 bet365, Unibet, both four places)
2.30 Goodwood – no bet
I‘m not going to advise a bet in the Golden Mile, a profitable race for this column over the years, but thought I’d quickly run through the race as I’ve spent so long studying it. Traditionally you want to be drawn in very low – closest to the fresh strip of ground that is now in-play after the false rail is removed – but on soft/heavy going there’s a good chance that the runners will again come across to the stands’ side rail, favouring those drawn high, just like in the 1m handicap that closed proceedings on Thursday. I might still perm stalls 1-6 in a ‘just in case’ Tote Trifecta. At various points over the past 12 hours, I was going to tip front-runner MIRSKY, mud-loving course expert RHOSCOLYN (8-1 from 28-1 after the rain arrived), mud-lover LATTAM, who did too much too soon into the headwind when disappointing in the Lincoln, and even AFENTIKO from stall 22. But after going for a walk to clear my head I’ll just watch without a financial interest.
On to the King George at 3.05…
KERDOS has improved since his 33-1 fifth to Highfield Princess in the 2023 renewal of this 5f Group 2 contest and is better equipped than most of his rivals to handle the soft ground. His record in Britain on ground rated good to soft or softer by Proform reads 13581 (2-5), with the eighth place coming on his reappearance last term when in need of the run. Clive Cox’s five-year-old gets his ground for the first time since last year’s Temple Stakes win at Haydock.
3.45 Goodwood – SOCIALITE (1pt win – 8/1 bet365, 7/1 generally)
SOCIALITE returned from a gelding operation to score at Windsor on his reappearance in late May, making all to win by two lengths from Native Warrior and Sterling Knight (both subsequent winners). That success came on officially good to firm going but his breeding (Too Darn Hot) suggests that deep ground won’t pose a problem and his record below Class 1 level reads 111 (3-3). Having already lost money on one Charles Hills-trained runner this week I probably shouldn’t be going in again but handler aside, everything looks in his favour.

Andrew’s Angles – Soft Ground Sires for When Summer Weather Turns
The British weather has taken a turn for the worse in the past few days (as it usually does when hosepipe bans are introduced) and we saw thunderstorms turn the ground soft at Windsor on Monday night and Beverley raced on officially heavy going. Windsor’s muddy track produced some bookmaker friendly results (33-1 and 14-1…
