2.00 Uttoxeter – JAX JUNIOR (1pt win – 7/1 bet365)
This is quite a deep novices’ hurdle for the track and the time of year – Diamond Dealer will be popular after his easy course and distance win last month, Jamie Snowden’s French import Julius Des Pictons is clear on Racing Post Ratings and Icare Colombe, who makes his debut for Fergal O’Brien, showed ability in Irish bumpers. However, the one I want to chance is Lucy Wadham’s JAX JUNIOR, who caught the eye when a 28-1 second in a soft-ground Huntingdon bumper in February on his second start last term. He raced in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail that day, doing well to finish three lengths behind Dunskay who plotted a wide course. That form was boosted by the 28-1 fourth – Neil Mulholland’s Blue Las – who is unbeaten in two subsequent starts and the fifth, Fergal O’Brien’s Shy Love, a comfortable 6-1 winner when returned to Huntingdon for his next start. The five-year-old was only third in another Huntingdon bumper the following month but again raced on the slowest part of the track and, with his yard in good form, he’s worth a punt on his hurdles debut.

4.45 Newcastle – THREE BEAUZ (1pt win – 8/1 bet365)
The morning headwind at Newcastle is forecast to disappear by the time this meeting gets underway and I’m going to side with pace angle THREE BEAUZ who could be in receipt of an easy lead. The Rebecca Menzies-trained four-year-old shaped well back from a short break/wind surgery at Southwell just four days ago, running sixth of ten after getting into a battle for the early lead. She caused an 18-1 upset on her latest course visit and, while her stable could be in better form, she’s worth chancing to small stakes.
