12.45 Ascot – STONER’S CHOICE (1pt ew – 22/1 Spreadex, William Hill, 20/1 generally, each-way terms may vary)
Three of the four runners were determined to make the running in the 2m5f Pertemps qualifier run at Kempton on November 11th, and it was obvious soon after the start that it was going to be set up perfectly for hold-up performer Pyramid Place, who sauntered through to score by four and a half lengths from STONER’S CHOICE. Dargiannini, who weakened into a 46.5L fourth after disputing the early lead went close when 18-1 at Doncaster next time to give the form a boost. Stoner’s Choice won a bumper at left-handed Warwick over five years ago but his six wins over obstacles have come on right-handed tracks and he’s worth a small interest at a big price, despite a concern about the big field (all his wins have come in fields of 11 or fewer runners).

6.30 Wolverhampton – ROBS UMBRELLA (1pt win, 9-1 Spreadex, William Hill, 8-1 generally)
There was a strong track bias at Chelmsford’s evening meeting on Thursday December 5th where eight of the nine winners came from midfield or further back, often after challenging wide. Two of those winners have been out since and both were beaten, including one who finished last of seven (4-1). I’ve flagged the eight patiently-ridden winners as ones to oppose next time and they include Profitman, the current 9-2 second favourite for this 7f Class 6 handicap. He came late from his stall 9 of 11 (none-runner adjusted draw) in a similar race that night and looked flattered. The Richard Fahey-trained ROBS UMBRELLA, who was wearing a first-time visor, chased home Profitman in second place, doing well to finish so close after making the running in the ‘swamp’. Fahey’s runners who were visored for the first time on their latest outing have a solid record when returned to the track within four weeks (regardless of whether the headgear was retained or not), landing 13 of their 67 starts since the spring of 2016 for a profit of £25.88 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 7.37, A/E = 1.76).

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Does Cheltenham Form Translate from the Old Course to the New Course?
We have a two-day Cheltenham meeting to get stuck into at the end of the week (Friday/Saturday) where the action switches from the Old Course – used during October/November – to the New Course. Last month, the Racing Post published a ‘Walking The Course With Aidan Coleman’ article in which the jockey highlighted the differences…
