1.20 Newmarket – SHAGRAAN (1pt win – 8-1 bet365)
SHAGRAAN was only eight of 20 when 4-1 favourite for a 5f handicap at Goodwood last time but his hold-up style left him with a mountain to climb in a race in which it paid to be handy. Plenty of the hold-up horses from that contest have run well since, notably 7th and 3rd Miss Attitude and Redorange who ran one-two in a French Listed race last time and 14th-placed Reigning Profit, a 10-1 winner on his next start.
3.00 York – EGOLI (2pt win – 15-2 Ladbrokes, Coral, 7-1 generally)
EGOLI was too green to do himself justice when a 5-1 six-length fifth of 13 to ROCK ON THUNDER (re-opposes today and the main danger) when debuting in a Leicester maiden that worked out phenomenally well and he improved his RPR (Racing Post Rating) by 18lb when beating Rikki Tiki Tavi (winner since) into second place in a 6f York maiden. Ralph Beckett’s No Nay Never colt followed that with a comfortable Newbury novice win under a penalty from Song Of Clyde (winner here yesterday) and his sixth of sixth of nine to Coppull in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes at Goodwood is safely ignored as he was poorly drawn, doing best of the quartet who raced down the centre of the track. The return to a flat track will suit and he can continue his progression.
3.35 York – JM JUNGLE (1pt e/w 12-1 Ladbrokes, Coral, 11-1 generally)
JM JUNGLE (stall 13 of 17) caused a 14-1 upset on his Group-race debut in the King George Qatar Stakes at Goodwood and, while well drawn that day, can prove it was no fluke by following up in the Nunthorpe. John and Sean Quinn’s five-year-old has the ideal pressing style for this Group 1 contest, was a winner at the meeting last year and looks the type to be a better horse in a better race as the early pace will be strong. The middle of the track looks the place to be from what we’ve seen on the straight course at York so far this week and he’ll tack across to the centre to track likely front-runner Night Raider (stall 8). I’ll like the place chances of hold-up performers MGHEERA (stall 7) and SHE’S QUALITY (stall 11) but it’s hard to come from too far off the pace in this Group 1 contest.
6.35 Hamilton – BEYLERBEYI (1.5pt win, 4-1 bet365, 7-2 Hills)
Ian Williams’ BEYLERBEYI has a cracking record in high summer (June to August), recording form figures of 311138503111 (6-12) for a profit of £19.38 to a £1 level stake at SP. There’s little between him and Roger Varian’s DEFIANCE here, but the early market typically favours the Newmarket runner, and he should encounter the required decent gallop.
