1.50 York – SHADOW DANCE (1pt win – 11/2 William Hill, Unibet, 5/1 generally)
Four-year-olds who had been off the track for more than three weeks have won nine of the last ten renewals of this 1m4f handicap and backing all 36 qualifiers would have returned a profit of £86.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. The only blank year came in 2021 when the two qualifiers included the 9-1 runner-up (beaten by a neck). We have just two qualifiers again this year – Track Of Time and SHADOW DANCE, with preference for the last-named. Roger Varian’s gelding, who went close at Ripon last time. He remains open to improvement on his third start since a gelding operation and will appreciate any rain that falls overnight (6-7mm is forecast).
3.35 York -WASHINGTON HEIGHTS (1pt ew – 20/1 generally with the firms paying four places, 18-1 Sky Bet, five places)
WASHINGTON HEIGHTS was only tenth of 13 to Khaadem in the Queen Elizabth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot but will be suited by the return to York and is taken to out-run his price in the Nunthorpe. Kevin Ryan’s four-year-old has run well in defeat in all three previous course starts, finishing second of 19 (beaten by a head), second of 21 (beaten by a head) and fourth of 14 to subsequent July Cup winner Mill Stream (beaten by just half a length from a poor draw). His forcing style will be an asset, the cut back to 5f is unlikely to inconvenience him and the two-month break can be viewed positively given his good record when fresh.
4.10 York – REACH (1pt ew – 5/1 generally)
The four previous winners of this valuable 1m2f fillies’ handicap were drawn in one of three lowest stalls and last year’s winner REACH (stall 1) has fared well on the draw front again. She also looks to have been laid out for this repeat attempt, running just twice this season and lining up on the back of a ten-week break. Her two runs this term produced placed efforts over course and distance in open company and she’s two from two when competing against her own sex.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Do ‘Gambling Yards’ Still Exist or Are They in the Past?
The world of horse racing no longer allows for the old-fashioned skulduggery that used to pervade the sport. However, in this week’s Myth Busters column, Andrew Mount asks whether “gambling yards” still exist, ones which love to land a touch with a well-backed favourite. When I first became interested in horse racing some stables were…
