2.40 Goodwood – DIAMOND BAY (1pt e/w – 8/1 generally with the firms paying four places)
Progeny of New Bay tend to hold their form well and simply backing the sire’s Flat runners (turf and all-weather) who finished in the top three on their latest start would have found 194 winners from 764 bets (25.4% strike-rate) for a profit of £119.60 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 152.57, A/E = 1.27). DIAMOND BAY contributed when scoring narrowly over 1m6f here earlier this month, benefitting from the removal of cheekpieces which were on for the vast majority of his runs in a winless 2024 campaign. He’s gone up 4lb for that victory but is still 9lb below his peak rating and has yet to finish out of the first four in four runs at Goodwood. ALMUHIT, runner-up in a 25-runner handicap hurdle at the Punchestown Festival when a selection in this column last month, looks the chief threat now returned to the Flat.

5.05 Bath – KING OF SPEED (1pt e/w – 11/2 generally)
DAPPLED LIGHT may have been flattered by last week’s Chepstow win as he raced closest to the favoured rail and Adrian Wintle’s five-year-old can be opposed under his penalty. The best alternative looks to be KING OF SPEED, despite a tricky draw in stall 8. Mark Loughnane’s six-year-old failed to strike a blow at Doncaster last time, finishing sixth of the seven runners, but the front-runners never came back to the field and his four-length defeat was a respectable effort in the circumstances. His earlier course and distance third from stall 11 was a solid effort and there are two or three in opposition who should ensure a decent gallop.

Andrew’s Angles – Why the London Gold Cup Can Be a Group Race Springboard
There’s a cracking meeting at Newbury on Saturday where the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes takes centre stage. I want to use this week’s column to discuss one of the supporting races – the 1m2f London Gold Cup Handicap. This heritage handicap has often been a springboard to Group-race glory, as we can see from the…
