Looking to continue what has been an immensely successful week of tipping, Andrew Mount has four best bets for Friday from Newbury and Dundalk.
Posted: 4pm, Thursday, October 23rd
4.35 Newbury – UNCLE DON (1pt e/w – 11/1 bet365)
UNCLE DON was a big eyecatcher when fourth ay Haydock on his penultimate start, repeatedly meeting trouble in running before staying on well when in the clear. I took a chance and backed him to small stakes in Binhareer’s race at York next time, but he was drawn on the wrong side and had to settle for a 20-1 11th of 19, a good record in the circumstances. He encounters soft ground for the first time since his best-of-the-high draws seventh of 19 in the Two Year Old Trophy at Redcar last year and looks well handicapped off 89.
5.10 Newbury – SUDDEN FLIGHT (0.5pt e/w – 20/1 bet365) & KNEBWORTH (0.5pt e/w – 14/1 bet365)
SUDDEN FLIGHT is one of several I can make cases for in this 6f handicap but, at the prices, Richard Hughes’ three-year-old has to be the bet. The gelding was only 14th of 25 in the Ayr Silver Cup last time but the 22-1 shot was fifth best of the unfavoured stands’ side group and that race has worked out remarkably well, including sixth place Binhareer (third on the stands’ side) who we bet when scoring at York next time. He’s 0-4 on turf but is worth chancing.
I also want to play his stablemate KNEBWORTH, the mount of stable jockey Finley Marsh. The five-year-old wont his race last year off a 1lb higher mark and his latest 16-1 Leicester sixth is easily excused as he was drawn on the wrong side of the track.
7.15 Dundalk – GUTSY GIRL (1pt win – 12/1 William Hill)
The Mercury Stakes has thrown up some shock results in recent years, but those winners raced prominently from low draws and stall 4 of 17 could help GUTSY GIRL to bounce back to winning ways in this 5f Listed contest. Joseph O’Brien’s four-year-old was only seventh of 18 when a 6-1 shot at the Curragh last time but fared second best of those to race down the nears side when the action unfolded on the far side of the track. She has yet to race on the all-weather for her current yard but her two Polytrack runs for Charlie Fellowes produced a win and a fourth place on unfavourable terms in a Class 2 conditions contest. I’ve saved on STAR OF LADY M who was drawn out of it when down the field in the Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp last time.
