3.35 Ascot – ALFRED BOUCHER (0.5pt ew – 25/1 generally)
Eight-year-old ALFRED BOUCHER has been off the track for 671 days, but I can’t resist a small each-way interest at a huge price. Ian Williams’ grey won this race in 2021 and can usually be relied upon to run his race in high summer. His record in handicap company over 1m+ in July/August reads 1141212 (4-7) and while next month’s Ebor meeting is undoubtedly his main target – he won the 2m handicap there in 2022 before going down by a short head in the Ebor just three days later – there’s plenty of pace in opposition and I can see him finishing to good effect into the frame, despite the 1m4f trip being on the short side.
7.15 York – RUNNINWILD (1pt win – 10/1 Paddy Power, BetVictor, 9-1 generally)
When I first sat down to look at this 6f Class 4 handicap I had expected to tip Good Earth each-way at around the 20-1 mark but, after drifting initially from 14-1 out to 16-1, Michael Herrington’s veteran is into 9-1 and I can leave him alone at that price. He’s arguably best over a stiff 5f but did win over track and trip in July 2022 and an easy 6f is fine. When Good Earth won here a couple of years ago RUNNINWILD was back in 18th place, but he had a terrible draw that day and the run was safely ignored. His other York run saw him finish third of 21 and the return to this easier track won’t inconvenience Ann Duffield’s hat-trick seeker. The recent return to form has coincided with the addition of cheekpieces and he won with plenty in hand at Carlisle last time. The 7lb ratings hike still leaves him 13lb below his career-high rating and he could prove hard to catch.
